Patent number: 9809441Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for enabling a vehicle operator to select a desired amount of fuel to add to a fuel tank, and wherein overfilling of the tank is prevented by pressurizing the fuel system with an onboard pump. In one example, the tank may be sealed to induce an automatic shutoff of a refueling dispenser if the fuel level is below the capacity of the tank, and in another example, wherein it is indicated that the tank is full, the fuel system may be pressurized via the pump to induce automatic shutoff of the refueling dispenser and to prevent further overfilling of the tank. In this way, vehicle operators may add desired amounts of fuel to the tank wherein shutoff of the refueling dispenser is automatic, and wherein liquid fuel entering an evaporative emissions control system as a result of overfilling a fuel tank is prevented.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2015Date of Patent: November 7, 2017Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Aed M. Dudar, Dennis Seung-Man Yang, Sheven Sharp, Russell Randall Pearce, Donald Ignasiak, Bryan Michael Bolger

Patent number: 7045983Abstract: The present invention provides a system for controlling the speed of a motor by altering the magnetic field of the motor. The system includes field modification module, and a motor having field windings and a rotor. The field windings are configured to receive a driving signal that generates a magnetic field causing a rotation of the rotor. The field modification module is proximate the motor and alters the magnetic field in response to an input signal thereby controlling the speed and torque of the rotor.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2004Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventors: Harold L. Castle, DeQuan Yu, Stephen T. Kempfer, Norman N. Krieger, Paul E. Fisher, Sheven Sharp, James L. Thompson

Publication number: 20040208763Abstract: A regenerative pump for an automotive fuel pump assembly comprises a cover and body that define a chamber and a ring impeller disposed within the chamber. An inlet is formed in the cover, and a discharge port is formed in the body. The body includes a pumping channel adjacent the chamber and having a discharge end section extending from the discharge port. The port diameter is greater than the radial width of the discharge end section. Also, the discharge end section has a depth that progressively increases adjacent the discharge port. The configuration of the discharge port and the channel end section reduces frictional and turbulent losses and thereby improves pumping efficiency.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 21, 2003Publication date: October 21, 2004Applicant: Visteon Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: DeQuan Yu, Harold Lawrence Castle, Sheven Sharp

Patent number: 6767181Abstract: A pump includes a pump casing and an impeller. The pump casing has an axis and comprises a cover having a face surface and a body positioned about the axis. A channel is defined in the face surface of the cover. An inlet opening extends through the cover and is coupled to the channel. The channel has a first section and a second section. The first section extends from the inlet opening and is continually sloped relative to the face surface of the cover. The first section has a length of about 40 to about 90 degrees, as measured circumferentially on the face surface of the cover about the axis. The first section includes an inlet ramp, a main ramp, and a secondary ramp, with the secondary ramp being positioned between the main ramp and the inlet ramp, and the inlet ramp being positioned adjacent the inlet opening. Each ramp has at least one depth and at least one slope.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2002Date of Patent: July 27, 2004Assignee: Visteon Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: DeQuan Yu, Sheven Sharp
