  • Patent number: 6079479
Abstract: The invention addresses the problem of edge bulging and breakout of as cast strip due to a decrease of perfect solid phase shell thickness of the strip caused by heat recuperation of the unsolidified portion of the strip, by providing a chamber 19 which encloses the travel path of a strip 8 delivered from a pair of chilled rolls 1a and 1b, a pair of chilled blocks 29a arranged in the chamber to be positioned near a nip between the chilled rolls 1a and 1b, with each chilled block 29a being shaped for loose fitting over an edge of a strip 8 and being capable of injecting cooling gas toward the edge of the strip 8. When the strip 8 is to be continuously cast, the interior of the chamber 19 provides an inert gas atmosphere, in which the cooling gas injected by the cooling blocks 29a injection-cools the edges of the strip 8 delivered from the chilled rolls 1a and 1b at a position near the nip between the chilled rolls 1a and 1b.

  • Patent number: 5871039
Abstract: To suppress wear of side surfaces of end closures due to rotation of cooling rolls in a twin roll strip caster, a pair of housings 11 are provided, each arranged to face on end faces of one or the other ends of cooling rolls 1a and 1b, which are arranged substantially horizontally and in parallel with each other, so that it may be displaced toward and away from the end faces, rolling members 12 rotatably supported by each of said housings 11 so that they may contact the corresponding end faces of the rolls 1a and 1b, a thruster body 21 supported on each of the housings 11 so that it may be displaced toward and away from the corresponding end faces of the rolls 1a and 1b, and an end closure 3 loaded on each of the thruster bodies 21 so that it may closely contact upper portions of the end faces of the rolls 1a and 1b. When the end closure 3 is worn to a predetermined extent, then the rolling members 12 contact the end faces of the rolls 1a and 1b to thereby suppress wear of the end closure 3.

  • Patent number: 4926925
Abstract: Position sensors at an inlet of a mold cavity defined by upper and lower block molds detect distances from the passing upper and lower block molds. In response to outputs from the position sensors, any deflection of the leading end of the tundish nozzle, which can be inclined with respect to the melt outlet of a tundish, toward the upper or lower block molds defining the mold cavity is detected by a control device to generate a drive signal which is delivered to a hydraulic cylinder adapted to incline the tundish nozzle by extending or retracting the rod thereof, whereby the gaps between the leading end of the tundish nozzle and the upper and lower block molds are maintained uniform.

  • Patent number: 4909304
Abstract: Downward force resulting from the block mold and its carrier of the upper mold assembly which move downwardly toward the upstream end of the mold cavity defined by the vertically spaced-apart upper and lower mold assemblies is transmitted to the block mold and its carrier of the upper mold assembly passing the upward path extending upwardly from the downstream end of the mold cavity so that the distortions of the cross-sectional configuration and size of the mold cavity due to the weight of the block molds and their carriers are prevented.

  • Patent number: 4895202
Abstract: In a mold cavity and/or in horizontal cooling zones, upstream- and downstream-side gears are drivingly coupled to each other through an endless-track-like member to which the tensile force is exerted by a tensioner, so that gaps between the adjacent block molds can be eliminated and therefore intrusion and leakage of a cooling liquid and melt are prevented.
