    Abstract: An automatic transmission provided with a combination of a belt drive continuously-variable speed transmission mechanism and a hydraulic control circuit. The belt drive continuously-variable speed transmission mechanism has an input variable-pitch pulley assembly and an output variable-pitch pulley assembly. The hydraulic control circuit includes a regulator valve, a throttle pressure valve, a reduction ratio detecting valve, a reduction ratio control valve and a reduction ratio control mechanism. The reduction ratio control valve has an axially slidable spool and two pressure chambers formed in the valve body thereof at both axial ends of the spool respectively. The reduction ratio control mechanism includes conduits for conducting the working fluid of a throttle pressure to the pressure chambers of the reduction ratio control valve and two solenoid valves adapted to drain the corresponding pressure chambers, respectively, when actuated.

    Abstract: The transmission comprises a hydraulic power transmission device, a V-belt stepless shifter and a planetary gear train. At restart time when the vehicle is at rest with the V-belt stepless shifter in high gear, the hydraulic power transmission device is operated to shift for providing a relatively high torque ratio, rather than the V-belt stepless shifter. A smooth restart is thus made possible. In addition, the planetary gear train permits the shifter smoothly to switch between forward and reverse. Both features meet the transmission needs of all vehicles.

    Abstract: A pressure regulating device for use in a hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission having a torque convertor, a gear transmission and an hydraulic control system provides a first pressure regulating valve for regulating the pressurized fluid output from a pump to a line pressure level, and applying the line pressure to the hydraulic control system. A second pressure regulating valve regulates the pressure of an excess portion of fluid supplied to the hydraulic control system from the first pressure regulating valve, and supplies the excess fluid to the torque convertor and regions requiring lubrication. Overheating of fluid in the torque convertor is prevented at low pressures by a bypass passage which assures at least a minimum fluid flow through the torque convertor at all times.

    Abstract: An accumulator for a hydraulic control system of frictional engagement mechanisms comprises a housing with a stepped bore, a first stepped piston reciprocable within the bore to form a back pressure chamber communicated with a source of line pressure, a second piston reciprocable within the first piston in a predetermind stroke to form an accumulation chamber communicated with the line pressure source, and a spring for biasing the second piston toward the accumulation chamber. In the initial stage, only the second piston is retracted against biasing force of the spring to modulate the line pressure acting on the frictional engagement mechanisms and is engaged at its retracted stroke end with the first piston. Subsequently, the first piston is retracted together with the second piston against the biasing force and the pressure in the back pressure chamber to further modulate the line pressure.
