  • Patent number: 10872017
Abstract: Techniques associated with restoring a file system object are described in various implementations. In one example, a method may include receiving a request to restore a file system object, the file system object being stored in backup data produced from a raw image backup of a file system. The method may also include determining whether the backup data is accessible from an on-premise storage system, and retrieving blocks of data associated with the file system object from the backup data without restoring the file system. The data blocks may be retrieved from the on-premise storage system if the backup data is accessible from the on-premise storage system, or from the off-premise storage system if the backup data is not accessible from on-premise storage system. The method may also include causing the file system object to be restored.

  • Patent number: 10664354
Abstract: Techniques for selecting a resource to be used in a data backup or restore operation are described in various implementations. An example method that implements the techniques may include determining, using a computing system, diagnostic information associated with a plurality of candidate resources that are available for use in a data backup or restore operation. The method may also include selecting, using the computing system, a recommended resource from among the plurality of candidate resources, the recommended resource being selected based at least in part on the diagnostic information. The method may also include causing the data backup or restore operation to be performed using the recommended resource.

  • Publication number: 20180314598
Abstract: Examples disclosed herein relate to container-based backups. Some of the examples may enable analyzing a source host to be backed up, wherein the source host is not a container instance, and determining a portion of the source host for which a container representation is to be created. The container representation may comprise a source host image that is captured at the time of backup. Some of the examples may enable creating the container representation.

  • Patent number: 9626254
Abstract: Methods for creating backup of data of a virtual environment to allow non-staged recovery are described. The described method may include receiving data of a virtual environment through one or more data streams for backup. The method also includes generating metadata corresponding to the received data and storing the received data at a first location of a backup storage unit. Further, the method includes storing the generated metadata at a second location of the backup storage unit, where the second location is different from the first location of the backup storage unit. The method further includes mapping the at least one predefined file to the stored data to create a mapping table to allow direct access to the stored data for non-staged recovery.

  • Publication number: 20160266892
Abstract: Example embodiments relate to patching of virtual machines during data recovery. An example method includes receiving an indication that a virtual machine is to be restored to a system. The method may include causing a virtual machine image file for the virtual machine to be sent to the system. The virtual machine image file may be retrieved from a data backup repository. The method may include indicating to the system, to a disk mounting tool of the system, that the virtual machine image file is to be mounted to create a mounted version of the virtual machine. The method may include indicating to the system that the mounted version of the virtual machine is to be patched. The method may include receiving an indication from the system that the patching is complete. The method may include sending to the system an indication that the virtual machine can be brought online.

  • Publication number: 20160246354
Abstract: Techniques for reducing power for storage devices are described in various implementations. An example method that implements the techniques may include determining a time period of inactivity during which backup operations are not scheduled to be performed on a storage device. The method may also include causing the storage device to enter a reduced-power state based on the determined time period of inactivity.

  • Publication number: 20150363274
Abstract: Techniques for storing backup data separate from catalog data are described in various implementations. An example method that implements the techniques may include receiving backup data that is to be backed up on a tape medium. The method may also include causing the backup data to be written to a first tape medium. The method may also include generating catalog data associated with the backup data, the catalog data including position information indicating where the backup data is stored on the first tape medium. The method may also include causing the catalog data to be written to a second tape medium that is different from the first tape medium.
