A gloss reproducible range, in which the appearance reproduction apparatus can reproduce gloss while keeping the color information after the color mapping, is obtained based on the information indicating the appearance reproducible range. Gloss mapping is performed to map the gloss information into the gloss reproducible range. An output signal to be outputted to the appearance reproduction apparatus is generated based on mapped appearance data including the color information after the color mapping and the gloss information after the gloss mapping.

Halftone processing includes calculating edge intensity in a local region, dividing the local region into a first pixel group and a second pixel group based on a pixel value of each pixel, determining a distribution order of dots based on a pixel value of each pixel, a threshold value, and the edge intensity such that dots are likely to be distributed to the first pixel group and dots are unlikely to be distributed to the second pixel group, and determining an output value for each pixel in the local region by distributing dots to some pixels included in the local region as much as a number of dots to be output to the local region while referring to the distribution order.

    Abstract: The value of a diffusing error for an interest pixel is added to image data of the interest pixel, and is calculated from error data occurred in quantization of pixels adjacent to the interest pixel. The image data, to which the value of the diffusing error is added, is quantized using a quantization threshold. Error data of the interest pixel is calculated from the result of the quantization and the image data to which the value of the diffusing error is added. Pixels which are adjacent to the interest pixel and have quantization results corresponding to the image data of the interest pixel are detected, and information between pixels is calculated based on differences between the image data and quantization results of adjacent pixels which fall within ranges corresponding to the detected adjacent pixels. The quantization threshold for the interest pixel is set based on the information between pixels.
