Recognising an end of character input stroke sequence (225) and determining from the stroke sequence a list of potential stroked input characters (235). Displaying the list of potential stroked input characters on a display of the device (240). Automatically performing a key selection character input mode (320) in response to a actuation of at least one of a plurality of character input keys (165) of the device and determining one or more potential keyed input characters corresponding to sequential actuation of the at least one of the character keys (330).
