  • Patent number: 4528336
Abstract: The invention provides a very efficient method with highly durable effect for preventing polymer scale deposition on the reactor walls and other surfaces coming into contact with the monomer during polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer in an aqueous medium such as in the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride. The method comprises coating the reactor walls, prior to polymerization, with a novel coating material which is a condensation product obtained by the condensation reaction of an aromatic amine compound such as aniline and an aromatic nitro compound such as nitrobenzene in the presence of a mineral acid and a specified condensation catalyst. It is sometimes preferable that the condensation product is basified or treated with an alkali or ammonium compound to be imparted with a modified solubility behavior.

  • Patent number: 4232141
Abstract: An improved method for the polymerization of vinyl chloride or a monomer mixture mainly composed of vinyl chloride in an aqueous polymerization medium is proposed in which a water-insoluble polymerization initiator, being solid at room temperature as dispersed in the aqueous medium and having a particle size distribution of 50 .mu.m or finer, is added to the polymerization mixture which is maintained at a temperature where the half-life period of the initiator is 120 minutes or longer or, alternatively, over a duration equal to or shorter than one-tenth of the half-life period of the initiator at the temperature of the polymerization mixture. By this method the polymerization can be homogeneously proceeded to produce vinyl chloride polymers having a uniform particle size distribution, excellent heat stability and much less fish-eyes when fabricated into sheets.

  • Patent number: 4180634
Abstract: A method for polymerizing vinyl chloride in an aqueous suspension wherein polymer scale is prevented from depositing on walls and other surfaces in contact with monomer in a polymerization reactor. According to the method, one or more compounds selected from iodine salts of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are added to the polymerization mixture. The effect of this method can be enhanced synergistically by coating a polar organic compound or an organic dye over the surfaces in contact with the monomer.

  • Patent number: 4173696
Abstract: A novel and improved method for polymerizing a vinyl monomer in a polymerization reactor is provided. The inner walls of the polymerization reactor and other surfaces coming into contact with the monomer are coated with an aqueous liquid containing at least one alkali metal or ammonium salt of an anionic dye of the sulfonic carboxylic acid form and having a pH value adjusted not to exceed 7 by aid of a pH adjusting agent, and the thus coated surfaces are dried with heat before the polymerization is conducted. The method serves to greatly reduce the deposition of polymer scale on those surfaces and, consequently, improve the productivity as well as the quality of polymer product.

  • Patent number: 4136242
Abstract: A polymerization vessel equipped with a condenser is charged with vinyl chloride, a suspending agent or dispersing agent, and water. The mixture is subjected to a preparatory stirring in the absence of a catalyst. The polymerization catalyst is added thereto when bubbling caused by the preparatory stirring subsides and stable suspended oil drops form. Blockage of the condenser by polymer scale deposition is substantially reduced. The addition of an alkaline substance, an oxidizing substance or an azine dye further reduces polymer scale deposition. Preferably the operation of the condenser is initiated only after the conversion rate is higher than 5% or the average value per unit hour.

  • Patent number: 4105839
Abstract: In the polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer other than vinyl chloride, deposition of polymer scale on the inner walls of a polymerization reactor and other surfaces coming into contact with the monomer is effectively prevented (regardless of the type of polymerization used, so long as it takes place in a heterogeneous phase) by coating the surfaces of the reactor with at least one compound selected from organic electron donor compounds and organic electron-acceptor compounds prior to polymerization; the compound or compounds having been or being brought into contact with an oxidizing agent, a reducing agent, an acid or a base, or having been or being irradiated with ultraviolet light.

  • Patent number: 4090015
Abstract: In the emulsion polymerization of a dienic monomer or a mixture containing a dienic monomer and at least one other copolymerizable monomer in an aqueous medium, the deposition of polymer scale on the inner walls of the polymerization reactor and other surfaces in contact with the monomer or monomeric mixture can be remarkably reduced or prevented by providing coating layers of an organopolysiloxane on those surfaces, prior to the polymerization, by applying the organopolysiloxane directly to the surfaces or by applying one or a mixture of hydrolyzable organosilanes to the surfaces, followed by hydrolysis-condensation of the silanes, to form the organopolysiloxane in situ.

  • Patent number: 3945958
Abstract: When vinyl chloride or a mixture of monomers containing vinyl chloride as its main component is subjected to suspension-polymerization, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, employing as a suspending agent an aqueous medium consisting of two kinds of water-soluble cellulose ethers, the 2% aqueous solution of one of which has a viscosity of at most 100 cps at 20.degree.C, and that of the other has a viscosity of at least 400 cps at 20.degree.C, the product obtained will be a porous polymer superior not only in uniformity of particle size, and absorptivity of plasticizers and liquid heat-stabilizers but also in processability.
