  • Patent number: 7877964
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the production of a pocketed spring unit, the method comprising the steps of compressing and feeding a plurality of springs (42) into troughs (2A, 4A) or castellations in opposed conveyor belts (2, 4), moving said springs (42) from said troughs (2A, 4A) or castellations to a position between upper and lower layers of fabric or other material (16A, 18A), step-wise advancing said material (16A, 18A) and said springs (42) in the direction of the output of the apparatus and welding together said lengths of fabric or other material (16A, 18A) at each step-wise advancement by a plurality of sequentially controlled welding anvils (10) so as to form a plurality of discrete pockets (46) each containing a spring (42). Apparatus for carrying out the method is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6668406
Abstract: A spring unit (2) for incorporation into a bed, divan bed, mattress, or other upholstery unit comprises a first spring (4) and a second spring located (6) within said first spring (4). The first spring (4) may be a pocketted spring, or the second spring may be a pocketted spring, or both of said springs may be pocketted springs, the pockets of said pocketted springs being composed of a woven material and/or a synthetic material.

  • Patent number: 6622384
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming spring units for use in a mattress, bed, divan bed, or other upholstered unit, the method including the step of inserting a second spring (12A) into a first spring immediately prior to said first spring being formed into a pocketted spring. The second spring (12A) may be formed into a pocketted spring prior to insertion into said first spring. The apparatus includes means (4) for feeding a second spring (12A) to a composite spring forming station (6) immediately prior to a first spring being fed to said station, means to compress and rotate the formed composite spring (30) through substantially 90°, means to insert the composite spring into a sleeve of material, and means to form said composite spring and a portion of said sleeve into a pocketted spring unit.

  • Patent number: 6523812
Abstract: The invention discloses a spring unit for use in a sprung unit such as a bed, divan bed, mattress, or other upholstered unit, the spring unit comprising a pocket of fabric or other suitable material and having at least two sub-pockets, each of said sub-pockets containing a resilient member. The pocket will preferably be divided across, laterally, or diagonally so as to form said at least two sub-pockets. The spring unit may be formed with two sub-pockets or three or more sub-pockets each containing a resilient member. The sub-pockets may be of equal length or of differing lengths, and the resilient members will preferably be springs which may be of equal lengths or of differing lengths and of equal or differing rates of compression. The pocket will be divided by fabric or other suitable material which is integral with the pocket or by discrete piece(s) of fabric or other suitable material secured to said pocket to form said sub-pockets.

  • Patent number: 6122900
Abstract: A system and method for manufacturing pocketed compound nested coil springs includes inserting a compressed, preferably pocketed, smaller coil spring into a horizontally oriented larger coil spring either prior to compressing and inserting the outer coil spring into pocket material or after the larger coil spring has been pocketed thereby requiring the first spring to be inserted into and through an opening in the pocket material.
