  • Patent number: 8972482
Abstract: A remote site downloading system is disclosed in which a local computer establishes a session with a content server, and a content file and geographic destination drive are selected. The local computer is typically on a first access network and the user wishes to have the file downloaded to a geographic drive, i.e., a remote site computer whose location and other properties are mapped in a mapping file on the local computer. The geographic drive is usually on a different access network in a dynamic location such as a hotspot or a fixed location such as broadband cable or DSL. The local computer is specially programmed to allow selection of the geographic target drive, pack information comprising cookies and a URL, and sends it to the remote geographic drive computer, where it may act as a proxy to cause downloading from the content server to the geographic drive on the remote site computer.

  • Patent number: 8447876
Abstract: A computer method and related apparatus for delivering content files to a client computer are disclosed wherein a request for a content file on a content server is received from a client; a future time period during which the content file will be available on a cache server is determined; and a rewritten uniform resource locator comprising time period availability information, or a link to a file comprising the time period availability information, is returned from the server to the client. The client can use the information to obtain the content file in the determined future time period.

  • Patent number: 7814483
Abstract: Remote site downloading of content to a hotspot occurs by way of a cache server, which, when networked the hotspot, processes download, order proxies received from remote content provider servers or content user mobile devices. The cache server stores content files downloaded over the Internet from the content provider servers according to the proxies, and delivers content files to the appropriate mobile devices when they sign in at the hotspot. For example, a set top box at a hotspot can receive an instant message which includes a data set, including cookies, from a personal data assistant. There after, the set top box can download a movie from a movie vendor web site which has been previously ordered and paid for by a user using the personal data assistant over a cellular network, and then wirelessly transmit the movie to the personal data assistant using Wi-Fi protocol when it arrives at the hotspot and is authenticated.

  • Publication number: 20100036949
Abstract: A method for performing centralized scheduling of content delivery is described including performing admission control, locating a server that is a source of content, determining a content delivery schedule and reordering the content delivery schedule over a content delivery network (CDN). Also described is a method for performing admission control including reordering a request queue based on partially served committed requests for content and newly arrived requests for content and determining if the newly arrived request for content can be admitted to the request queue.

  • Publication number: 20090254659
Abstract: A system and method for downloading content in a peer-to-peer network are described including receiving, by a first peer, a list of content available in the peer-to-peer network, requesting, by the first peer, content availability information for a unit of content and receiving, by the first peer, content availability information. A system and method for downloading content in a peer-to-peer network are also described including forwarding, content availability information in response to a request for the content availability information, wherein the content availability information includes a location of a unit of content and a status of each peer in the peer-to-peer network having the unit of content available and receiving a reservation to schedule a download of the unit of content. The system and method also include the ability to allow delayed downloading of the in accordance with a reservation for said content.

  • Publication number: 20090113024
Abstract: The downloading of content to a requesting client (A1, A2 and A3) through content distribution network consisting of edge servers occurs upon receiving a content request, a content server responses with a request-routing message that includes source data identifying the content and path data identifying a path through the network to a source of such content. Having the path information in request-routing message enables a requesting client to make the request to a particular edge server, which in turn can register the downloading request and access the content from an appropriate location, thereby obviating the frequent communication between the content server and edge servers on the path.

  • Publication number: 20080235360
Abstract: A system and method schedules downloading of content files from a content server to a client through a cache server. A user can request a content file for future delivery at a certain service time at a certain location such as a hotspot. A cache server receives these requests and sorts them in an order which depends on the relative service times, and eliminates redundancies by only downloading content files not already stored in the cache server. A scheduling algorithm minimizes the instances of tardiness under the constraint of cache storage capacity.
