    Abstract: A method for counteracting tensile stress in an article is disclosed, including heating the article and applying compressive stress to the article along a compressive stress vector, the compressive stress vector including a compressive stress vector component opposite in direction to a tensile stress vector of a thermally-induced tensile stress of the article. The compressive stress is applied by thermally-induced autogenous pressure by a fixture contacting the article. A fixture for counteracting tensile stress is disclosed, including a first compression member and a second compression member, and a position lock connecting the first compression member to the second compression member and reversibly fixing the first compression member relative to the second compression member. The first compression member and the second compression member include compressive surfaces having mating conformations for surfaces of an article. The position lock includes a material composition.

    Abstract: A turbine airfoil for a rotating blade or stationary nozzle vane includes an airfoil body including a leading edge and a trailing edge. A coolant supply passage extends within the airfoil body and a coolant return passage extends within the airfoil body, with each passage having respective a supply and return connection passage to an exterior surface of the airfoil body. A seat in the exterior surface of the airfoil body receives a cover that includes a trench on an interior surface thereof to fluidly connect the return connection passage and the supply connection passage and form a coolant passage for the airfoil body. Various arrangements of cooling circuits may be created with the cover that allow for reuse of the coolant.

    Abstract: Additive manufacturing methods, and articles made using additive manufacturing methods, are described herein. One embodiment is an article that comprises a hafnium-bearing superalloy. The superalloy includes at least about 50 weight percent nickel, from about 0.015 weight percent to about 0.06 weight percent carbon, and up to about 0.8 weight percent hafnium. The article further includes a plurality of primary carbide phase particulates disposed within the superalloy; the plurality has a median size less than about 1 micrometer. A method includes melting and solidifying particulates of a metal powder feedstock to build an intermediate article comprising a series of layers of solidified material. The feedstock includes the above-described superalloy composition. The method further includes heating the intermediate article to a temperature of at least about 950 degrees Celsius to form a processed article.
