Publication number: 20220078704Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein relate to reducing power consumption of an electronic device scanning for wireless communication signals while maintaining or even improving an efficiency of the scanning operations. To do so, the electronic device may include more than one scan core, such as a main core and a receiving core. The receiving core may have limited functionality compared to the main core. For example, the receiving core may only receive wireless signals (including scanning for wireless signals). That is, the receiving core may not support certain operations that consume relative high power that are supported by the main core, such as transmission of signals. In this way, operation of the receiving core, either in place of or in addition to the main core, may reduce power consumption of the electronic device by avoiding high power consuming operations, such as data transmission, while scanning for various signals.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2021Publication date: March 10, 2022Inventors: Sriram Lakshmanan, Tushar Ramanlal Shah, Udaykumar R. Patent number: 10070339Abstract: Apparatus and methods for configuring wireless circuitry of a wireless device to optimize power consumption based on operating states of the wireless device are disclosed. When associating with or while associated with a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capable wireless local area network (WLAN) access point (AP), the wireless device configures the wireless circuitry to use a MIMO mode that includes at least two spatial streams for communication with multiple radio frequency (RF) receive chains active, a single-input single-output (SISO) mode or a multiple-input single-output (MISO) mode that includes only one spatial stream and a single RF receive chain active, or a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) mode that includes only one spatial stream and multiple RF receive chains active, based on balancing application requirements for data throughput with power saving modes to conserve battery levels. MIMO modes can be used when an active application benefits from MIMO rates or when transferring large files.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 2016Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Kapil Chhabra, Udaykumar R. Beamforming methods and systems employing measured power at a receiver to perform channel estimation
Patent number: 8380133Abstract: Beamforming methods and systems are described in which differential channel estimation can be computed based on measured power at receiver. Simultaneous activation of antennas in separate pairs can be used to determine relative phases of antennas with respect to a reference antenna based on the power measurements. In turn, the beam forming signals can be weighted in accordance with the relative phases to adapt the signals to a multipath environment. Existing power measurement capabilities of conventional receivers can be employed to achieve approximate channel estimates.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2010Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: NEC Laboratories America, Inc.Inventors: Sriram Lakshmanan, Karthikeyan Sundaresan -
Patent number: 8340584Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for transmitting signals between a transmitter and a receiver by differentially estimating channel coefficients for each of the antenna elements relative to a reference antenna element; determining beam weights to remove oscillator induced phase or offset; and applying a correction (beamforming solution) at the transmitter to make the phase of the received signal from different antenna elements to be coherently combined at the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2009Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: NEC Laboratories America, Inc.Inventors: Sriram Lakshmanan, Karthikeyan Sundaresan, Ravindranath Kokku, Mohammad Ali Khojastepour

Patent number: 8179841Abstract: Wireless communication collision coding devices, systems, and methods are provided. According to some embodiments, wireless communication systems can generally comprise a plurality of wireless access points and wireless clients. The wireless access points can be controlled by a network controller. The wireless access points can be configured to enable a plurality of wireless clients to wirelessly connect to the wireless access points. The wireless access points can be configured to encode data packets destined for the wireless clients with a collision coding scheme so that wireless data packets concurrently transmitted from at least two wireless access points colliding in air can be decoded at the wireless clients with the collision coding scheme so that data packets are not affected by collisions with another data packet. Other aspects, embodiments, and features, are also claimed and described.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2010Date of Patent: May 15, 2012Assignee: Georgia Tech Research CorporationInventors: Raghupathy Sivakumar, Sriram Lakshmanan, Cheng-Lin Tsao
