  • Patent number: 6240639
Abstract: A fluid metering roll such as an anilox roll is comprised of a tubular carbon fiber composition core having one or more metallic layers intervening between the core and a surface layer comprised of ceramic, the ceramic having outwardly opening fluid metering cells. The method of forming the roll includes steps of thermal spray applying one or more layers comprised of metal over the roll surface the layers intervening between the roll and an external ceramic coating. Characterizing features of the application method reside in each of the thermal spray applied layers being directed toward the core at a negative rake angle of from about 11½ to about 13½ and preferably 12½°, the core and layers which receive the thermal spray being simultaneously cooled to about 110° Centigrade or less during application of the thermal spray.

  • Patent number: 5088402
Abstract: A printing fluid input system (30) for use in a keyless lithographic printing press wherein a metering roller (20) has at least first and second ends mounted for rotation about an axis and has an oleophilic and hydrophobic surface (40) intermediate the first and second ends (32,34) which retains a natural quantity of printing fluid. A housing (42) has an open first side (46) which mates with at least a portion of the surface (40) of the metering roller (20) to define a closed chamber (44) containing the printing fluid under a predetermined pressure. End seal assemblies (48, 50) are mounted on opposed ends of the housing (42), each of the end seal assemblies (48,50) having at least a first surface (56) for mating with respective end sections (58,60) of the metering roller (20). A reverse angle doctor blade (62) on the housing (42) has an edge (66) for contacting the surface (40) of the metering roller (20) for removing excess printing fluid adhering to the surface (40) as the metering roller (20) rotates.

  • Patent number: 4862799
Abstract: An ink metering roller of an engraved aluminum base having a substantially continuous anodized surface layer of aluminum oxide ranging from about 1 to 3 microns in thickness and a layer of copper plate deposited directly onto the anodized surface.

  • Patent number: 4690055
Abstract: A keyless inking system for lithographic printing presses wherein an ink/water mixture is contained in an ink pan having a tray portion within which an ink roller is mounted whereby ink/water mixture enters the tray portion on one side and is drawn by the ink roller to the other side of the tray in the nip between the ink roller and a celled metering roller thereby delivering an excess of the mixture to the celled metering roller, the balance of the mixture being conveyed over a weir into a reservoir for continuous mixing and recirculation back to the pan, and wherein the excess ink/water mixture on the metering roller is continuously scraped off by means of a doctor blade and wherein the metered portion of the ink/water mixture remaining in the metering roller's cells is delivered in part into the inking train of a more-or-less conventional lithographic printing press.
