  • Patent number: 7702495
Abstract: A method for performing a simulation of an electrosurgical procedure is provided. The method includes the step of generating a three-dimensional model of a medium comprising one or more material regions representing a physical object or a region of the tissue. The method also includes the step of calculating one of an electrical energy solution and a thermal transport solution based on one of a mathematical model and finite element method. The method further includes the step of updating one or more property values of the material region in response to temperature changes based on an empirically derived value, wherein one of the electrical energy solution and the thermal transport solution is updated as a function of the updated property value.

Date of Patent: April 20, 2010
    Assignee: Covidien AG
Inventors: Stanley Humphries, Kyle R. Rick, David A. Schechter, Nahum Goldberg

  • Patent number: 7467075
Abstract: A system and method for performing a simulation of an electrosurgical procedure are disclosed. The method includes the steps of generating a three-dimensional medium, which includes one or more material regions representing a physical object. The method also includes the steps of dividing the medium into multiple hexahedron elements to generate a three-dimensional conformal mesh and assigning each element to the material region. The method further includes the steps of calculating an electrical energy solution and a thermal transport solution and generating graphical representations illustrating one or more aspects of the electrical energy and the thermal transport solutions.

  • Patent number: 5783900
Abstract: A broad-beam high energy electron accelerator has an electron injection section arranged for increased current density with greater uniformity and higher transmission through the foil exit window. A plurality of cathode rods are disposed in a transverse plane and spaced at about 2.4 cm, and a reflector plate behind the cathode rods is biased negative relative thereto. A planar control grid is disposed distal of said cathode rods and a screen grid is disposed parallel to and distal of the control grid. Field-shaping wires are disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of the cathode rods and between the same and the reflector plate, with the respective field-shaping wires being disposed parallel to said rods and midway between them. The same positive bias (e.g., 11 kV) is applied to both the control grid and the field-shaping wires.

  • Patent number: 4045677
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for producing intense megavolt ion beams are disclosed. In one embodiment, a reflex triode-type pulsed ion accelerator is described which produces ion pulses of more than 5 kiloamperes current with a peak energy of 3 MeV. In other embodiments, the device is constructed so as to focus the beam of ions for high concentration and ease of extraction, and magnetic insulation is provided to increase the efficiency of operation.
