  • Publication number: 20020043144
Abstract: A device and a method for forming a weakening area in an airbag cover having a support layer and a decorative layer over the support layer include a cutting support and a cutter. The support supports the airbag cover with the decorative layer side facing down and the cutter is displaceably positionable over the support. A tear line of a predetermined pattern is formed through the support layer and into the decorative layer with the cutter while controlling the depth of cut relative to the support to precisely control the residual thickness of the tear line and to prevent the cutter from penetrating through the decorative layer. The controller controllably displaces the cutter for precise controlled cut.

  • Patent number: 6336655
Abstract: The invention relates to an array for activating the horn in built-in modular steering wheels, wherein the cover of the airbag that is placed on top of the air bag unit forms part of the steering wheel rim. According to the invention, the air bag unit (5) is fixed to at least one contact of the horn (17) that is connected thereto and is fixed to at least one section of the steering wheel (4). Said section is elastically deformable in the direction of the corresponding mating contact (18). The air bag unit (5) is placed preferably in an elastically deformable section of the air bag cover (2).

  • Patent number: 6264235
Abstract: The invention relates to a steering wheel having a nave, spokes, a rim and an air bag module. According to the invention, a rotationally arranged component (11) is secured to the steering wheel nave (2, 3) or to the steering column allocated thereto, which is designed to accommodate at least one further subassembly. The center of gravity of said component (11) and/or the other subassembly is positioned so eccentrically that the rotationally arranged component (11) remains in the same position when the steering wheel is rotated as when it is straightened. The advantage of the inventive steering wheel is that the subassembly connected to the rotationally arranged component, e.g. an air bag, does not change its position either when the steering wheel is rotated.

  • Patent number: 6257618
Abstract: The invention relates to a collision protection device, especially for passengers in vehicles and more especially in motor vehicles, consisting of a cushion or a cover plate, an air bag, a securing component, electronic or mechanical devices and a gas generator, in which the air bag consists of a coated or uncoated fabric, a lower section (2) with a gas inlet aperture, which may be fitted with a flame guard, an upper section (1), one or more multi-layer safety stop bands (3), where the ends of the safety stop band(s) is/are secured by sewn seams (4) to the upper section, the lower section, other components or, if there are more than one of them, together, in which the sewn seams are substantially circular or oval within the ends of the safety stop band(s).

  • Patent number: 6145452
Abstract: An arrangement for insulating a wall of a metallic combustion chamber is disclosed. A layer of insulating material is applied to the metallic wall and a plurality of ceramic wall panels are applied over the ceramic insulation material. The wall panels are retained by fastening elements that pass through an opening in the wall panels. The opening in the wall panels has a frusto-conical surface and the engagement surface of the fastening element is at least partially spherical to avoid mechanical and thermal stresses.

  • Patent number: 6115998
Abstract: A method for folding an airbag for an airbag module is characterized in that an empty airbag is spread out and gathered in towards a center to give a folded airbag. The airbag is gathered inside a fixed vertical profiled section having a top and a bottom separated by a distance corresponding to the predetermined height of the folded airbag. Only a few gathering tools and only a few operations are necessary to gather the airbag. A device for carrying out the method is characterized by a lower part on which the airbag is spread out flat and an upper part separated from the lower part by a distance that corresponds to the vertical profile required for the gathered airbag. Gathering tools are mounted between the upper part and the lower part so that they surround the airbag and so that their position relative to the airbag can be changed.

  • Patent number: 6041677
Abstract: A device for attaching a steering wheel hub to a steering wheel column, while simultaneously fixing a contact unit to the steering wheel, includes a fastener that has a head part engaging in the hub and a shank that engages partially in the hub and partially in the shaft. In a locked position, the fastener engages a recess in the contact unit to prevent the steering wheel hub from rotating relative to the stator of the contact unit. In an unlocked position, the fastener partially engages the hub, partially engages the column, and disengages from the recess in the contact unit to fixedly connect the hub to the column and allow the hub, and therefore the rotor of the contact unit, to rotate.

  • Patent number: 6032977
Abstract: A gas bag for a side airbag module which is inflatable by means of a filling device and which consists of at least two chambers in communication with each other. A check strip is provided as a wall between the two respective chambers. The check strip is attached by its edges to opposite surfaces of the gas bag. The ends of the strip do not extend to the periphery of the gas bag allowing the chambers to communicate with each other and thereby allowing gas to pass from one chamber to the other. When the gas bag is inflated, the check strip has a path running at least partially deviating from a straight line. The edges of the strip may also run in different directions. As a result, the gas bag may be simply subdivided into chambers of different size and shape. Consequently, the shape of the inflated gas bag is influenced.

  • Patent number: 5806916
Abstract: Known cross members consisting of an alloy press-drawn section do not permit easy assembly of the passenger airbag module or other bolt-on parts after the cross members have been installed. Accordingly, the press-drawn section of the cross member is provided with at least one groove open at the top in such fashion that a rib or a bar of a bolt-on part can be added from above such that simple pivoting enables a seating surface of the cross member to cooperate with a mounting surface of the bolt-on part in the installed state. Assembly is extremely simple. The cross members are used for the instrument panels of motor vehicles.
