Patent number: 8380464Abstract: Dimensions of each physical object to be moved from an original physical site to a destination physical site are at least approximately determined. Each physical object is tagged with an identifier. A virtual layout of the destination physical site and the dimensions and the identifier of each physical object are input into a computer program. A user-specified location of where within the destination physical site each physical object is to be placed when moved to the destination physical site is input using the computer program, based on the virtual layout of the destination physical site and the dimensions and the identifier of each physical object. At the destination physical site, each physical object is looked up using the identifier of the physical object to determine the user-specified location of where to place the physical object within the destination physical site.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2008Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Stephen F. Patent number: 8229897Abstract: A technique for implementing policy-aware backup and restore capability in a tiered storage system. If a data set's contents are backed up from the tiered storage system to a backup storage system, metadata for the data set may also be backed up. Prior to the data set being restored from the backup storage system to the tiered storage system, the backed up metadata is restored and processed to determine a tier among the tiered storage pools to which the data set will be restored.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2006Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: David M. Cannon, Thomas K. Clark, Stephen F. Correl, Toby L. Marek, James J. Seeger, Jr., David M. Wolf, Jason C. Young, Michael W. Young

Patent number: 7870353Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for copying storage units and related metadata to storage. A user data storage location includes user data and a metadata storage location includes metadata data for the user data. A first type of copy operation is performed to copy at least one specified storage unit having user data to at least one copy of the at least one specified storage unit. A second type of copy operation is performed to copy metadata for the at least one specified storage unit being copied to a copy of the metadata for the copied at least one file set.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2005Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Stephen F. Patent number: 7831623Abstract: A method, system, and article of manufacture, wherein a plurality of references to a plurality of files corresponding to a plurality of devices are stored in a data structure implemented in a computational device, wherein the computational device is coupled to the plurality of devices via a network. Access is enabled to the data structure to a distributed application, wherein the distributed application uses a stored reference in the data structure to determine a file corresponding to a device, and wherein the distributed application performs data transfer operations with the device via the determined file.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2007Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Stephen F.
