  • Publication number: 20100077779
Abstract: An air source heat pump wherein heat is extracted from air at ambient temperature in an evaporator (4) and heat is rejected at a higher temperature in a condenser (2); further comprises an auxiliary heater (7) arranged to preheat the ambient air when required to prevent deposition of frost on the evaporator. The combustion heater may be a gas fired boiler, arranged to heat recirculating water for supplying heating radiators and wherein the flue gases mix with the ambient air before it passes over the evaporator.

  • Patent number: 5482744
Abstract: A heat transfer element (2) for use in boiling a liquid is produced by spraying a substrate, such as a heat exchanger tube, with a plasma of liquified metal particles and concurrently spraying the substrate with liquid carbon dioxide to provide a cooling effect. Preferably the metal particle spray (4) and the carbon dioxide spray (8) are spaced apart, and there is relative movement between the sprays and the substrate, such that a given area of the substrate is precooled by the cold carbon dioxide just prior to liquified metal particles impinging thereon. A shroud (6) may assist in directing the liquid carbon dioxide first onto the substrate, then into the spray of liquified metal particles.

  • Patent number: 5400615
Abstract: A refrigeration apparatus comprises a primary refrigeration circuit of the vapour compression type. Cooling is then provided at desired locations remote from the primary circuit using a secondary circuit containing carbon dioxide as a volatile secondary heat transfer substance. The carbon dioxide is liquified in secondary condenser (cooled by primary evaporator) and is circulated by circulation pump to expansion valves and cooling units at desired locations where it evaporates and provides cooling. The volume of possibly environmentally harmful refrigerant employed in the vapour compression primary circuit is minimized.

  • Patent number: 5108637
Abstract: A three component refrigerant composition for use in vapor compression refrigerators and avoiding the use of ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons comprises a three component mixture of:(i) a major portion comprised of chlorodifluoromethane (R22) of pentafluoroethane (R125);(ii) R125 or octafluoropropane (R218); and(iii) propanein non-flammable proportions.
