Patent number: 9198662Abstract: A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler. The assembly has a cartridge body having a support portion with a plurality of staple cavities with openings. There is also a plurality of staples, wherein at least a portion of each the staple is removably stored within a the staple cavity. Each the staple is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, and is deformable between an unfired configuration and a fired configuration. The assembly also includes a compressible tissue thickness compensator configured to be captured within the staples. The compressible tissue thickness compensator at least partially covers the staple cavity openings. The compressed tissue thickness compensator is configured to assume different compressed heights within different the staples. The compressible tissue thickness compensator includes a visualization indicator.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2012Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Trevor J. Patent number: 9050446Abstract: An injection port includes a port body having a fluid reservoir and a connector in fluid communication with the reservoir. The injection port further includes a conduit protection feature that is configured to protect against kinking of the conduit, decoupling of the conduit from the connector, or penetration of the conduit by a needle. The protection feature may include an anchor for anchoring the conduit to tissue to reduce conduit movement. The protection feature may include a recess that is configured to receive part of the conduit. The protection feature may include a bend formed in the connector to reduce transverse stresses in the conduit. The protection feature may include a bell-shaped shroud encompassing the connector. A sleeve may further protect the conduit and/or the coupling between the connector and the conduit.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2010Date of Patent: June 9, 2015Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Amy L. Marcotte, Scott A. Woodruff, Karalyn R. Tellio, Michael J. Vendely, Andrew T. Beckman, Stephen M. Torain, Craig D. Stover

Patent number: 8936582Abstract: An apparatus comprises a port, a catheter, a sleeve in communication with the catheter, and an alignment feature. The port is configured to be in fluid communication with an implantable band. The port comprises a septum operable to be pierced by a needle. The catheter is configured to establish fluid communication between the port and the implantable band. The catheter is further configured to deliver fluid to the implantable band. The sleeve is configured to interface with the port. The alignment feature is responsive to the catheter being fully secured to the port. The alignment feature prevents the port from being fully sutured to tissue unless the catheter is fully secured to the port.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2011Date of Patent: January 20, 2015Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Gina M. Szweda, Stephen M. Torain, Scott A. Woodruff

Patent number: 8663255Abstract: A gastric band comprises a bladder having an opening, an insertable component to fluidly seal the opening, and a strap that may be overmolded onto the bladder. The insertable component may be a grommet or a plug. Additionally, the insertable component may be coupled to a support member via a living hinge. In another configuration, the insertable component comprises a grommet and a suture loop at least partially formed within the grommet. A band may be provided instead of the strap, with the band having a grommet aperture formed through a deck such that the grommet may be inserted into the opening of the bladder. An overmolded shell having a latching member may be overmolded onto the deck to secure the grommet and a portion of the suture loop therein. The gastric band may further be coupled to a flexible conduit and an injection port.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2011Date of Patent: March 4, 2014Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Stephen M. Torain, Harry E. Payne, Jeffrey P. Wiley, Lauren S. Weaner
