Moving the pedal or the lever moves a flexible drive link which is wound around a hub of the drive wheel. As the flexible drive link is pulled and unwound from the hub, the drive wheel engages the floor and rotates a sufficient distance to overcome inertia and align the swivel wheels of the stretcher in the desired direction.
