  • Patent number: 8686654
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention relate to a switch-mode regulator, and more particularly, to systems, devices and methods of using a switch-mode regulator to regulate an LED current to improve overall LED system efficacy and suppress power consumption of a dimmable LED illumination system. Both high and moderate brightness modes are implemented in an LED driver based on the switch-mode regulator. In the high brightness mode, the LED current is larger than a preferred LED current. In the moderate brightness mode, the LED current is smaller than the preferred LED current, and the LED driver sustains the preferred driver efficiency while the LED current remains as a direct current. Such a switch-mode power supply or regulator may also be used in applications other than the LED illumination system.

  • Publication number: 20100045245
Abstract: A circuit for controlling a switching regulator includes a switching control circuit configured to operate one or more switches in a repeating sequence that includes a first state in which an inductor is coupled between an input supply and a load so that an increasing current passes from the input supply through the inductor and a second state in which the inductor is coupled between ground and the load so that a decreasing current passes through the inductor to the load; a circuit configured to cause the switching circuit to select the second state when the magnitude of the increasing current has reached a predetermined level; and a timing circuit configured to cause the switching circuit to select the second state for a predetermined period of time after the initiation of each second first.

  • Publication number: 20100045248
Abstract: A bi-directional Boost-Buck voltage converter includes a controller, a high-voltage capacitor, a lower-voltage battery, a resistive load, an inductor, and three or four switches, and provides a mechanism to efficiently provide power to the resistive load from the battery. It uses two configurations of the switches to configure the battery, the inductor, and the capacitor in a boost converter configuration to charge the capacitor from the battery. It uses two different configurations of the switches to configure the capacitor, the inductor, and the resistive load in a buck converter configuration to discharge the capacitor through the inductor and the resistive load.

  • Patent number: 7554826
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed to control output power from a switching power supply. A sample power converter controller circuit includes a control circuit coupled to be coupled to a switch. The control circuit includes a current sense circuit to be coupled to a primary winding of an energy transfer element coupled to the switch. The control circuit also includes a measurement circuit to be coupled to a secondary winding of the energy transfer element. A feedback circuit is also included and is coupled to the control circuit and coupled to receive a feedback-signal derived from an output of a power converter. The feedback circuit is coupled to output a signal to the measurement circuit. An output of the measurement circuit and an output of the current sense circuit are coupled to control a switching of the switch to regulate a combination of an output voltage and an output current of the power converter.

  • Patent number: 7272025
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed to control output power from a switching power supply. For example, a switching regulator according to aspects of the present invention includes a switch to be coupled to an energy transfer element of a power supply. A controller is coupled to the switch to control a switching of the switch to regulate an output voltage and an output current at an output of power supply output. A feedback circuit is coupled to the controller. The feedback circuit is coupled to receive a feedback signal from the output of the power supply. Combinations of the output voltage and the output current correspond to output regions. There is at least one regulated output region and one unregulated output region. At least one unregulated output region is a self protection auto-restart region. Within at least one unregulated output region, the switching regulator provides continuous output power at substantially the maximum output power of the switching regulator.
