Abstract: Disclosed are a structure with a substrate-embedded waveguide and a method of forming the structure. The waveguide includes cladding material lining a trench in a substrate, a core in the trench on the cladding material, and at least one cavity within the core. Each cavity extends from one end of the core toward the opposite end and contains a low refractive index material or is under vacuum so the waveguide is an arrow waveguide. An insulator layer is on the substrate and extends laterally over the waveguide and a semiconductor layer is on the insulator layer. Additionally, depending upon the embodiment, an additional waveguide can be aligned above the substrate-embedded waveguide either on the isolation region or on a waveguide extender that extends at least partially through the isolation region and the insulator layer to the waveguide.

Abstract: Structures including an electro-absorption modulator and methods of forming such structures. The structure comprises a waveguide core including a first tapered section, a second tapered section, and a longitudinal axis. The first tapered section and the second tapered section are aligned along the longitudinal axis. The structure further comprises a first waveguide taper overlapping the first tapered section of the waveguide core, a second waveguide taper overlapping the second tapered section of the waveguide core, and a multiple-layer structure on the waveguide core between the first waveguide taper and the second waveguide taper.

Abstract: A deflection unit for guiding and deflecting the support apparatus of an elevator system includes a deflection roller and an axle which is mounted on a carrier and on which the deflection roller is mounted and is freely rotatable. The axle has an axle head that axially secures the axle on one end. For torsion-free mounting of the axle, a securing member is bolted onto the carrier and supported on an anti-rotation safeguard section arranged on the axle head. A horseshoe-shaped retaining part as a retaining means for axially securing the axle on the carrier is mounted on the axle on the end opposite from the axle head. An annular securing member, which is connected by bolts to the retaining part, is used for securing the retaining part.

Abstract: A connecting element for connecting a first wall element and a second wall element, which is adjacent thereto, but spaced therefrom by a gap, of an elevator cage, includes a first plate element with a first edge region for resting on a first wall surface of the first wall element, a second edge region for resting on a second wall surface of the second wall element and a first middle region which connects these two edge regions and covers the gap. A second plate element is provided and has a third edge region for resting on a third wall surface of the first wall element, a fourth edge region for resting on a fourth wall surface of the second wall element and a second middle region connecting these two edge regions and covering the gap. The first plate element is connected with the second plate element to be movable relative thereto in a first direction.
