  • Patent number: 5336826
Abstract: Higher hydrocarbons are produced from methane by reacting the methane at elevated temperature, suitably in the range from 600.degree. to 800.degree. C., with an oxygen-containing gas having a ratio of methane to oxygen of greater than the stoichiometric ratio for complete combustion in the presence as catalyst of a lithium-doped material which under the reaction conditions is a physically base-stable, non-melting, oxygen-stable compound of an element of Groups III to VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements including the rare earth elements.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 22, 1986
Date of Patent: August 9, 1994
Assignee: The British Petroleum Company p.l.c.
Inventors: John H. Brophy, Steven R. Wade
  • Patent number: 5051390
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a cogel catalyst comprises preparing an aqueous solution containing a soluble compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a soluble metal compound which is thermally decomposable to a metal oxide capable of converting methane to higher hydrocarbons and a hydrolysable silane under such conditions that a homogenous cogel is formed. The cogel catalyst is effective for oxidizing methane to higher hydrocarbons and exhibits greater selectivity and lasts longer than conventional prior art catalysts. A process for using the cogel catalyst to effect oxidation of methane is also described.

Date of Patent: September 24, 1991
Assignee: The British Petroleum Company, p.l.c.
Inventors: Paul A. Diddams, Ian R. Little, Steven R. Wade
  • Patent number: 4962252
Abstract: Alkenyl-substituted benzene derivatives are produced by oxidatively coupling at elevated temperature a benzene having at least one activated saturated hydrocarbyl substituent in vapor form with a gaseous paraffinic hydrocarbon in the presence of a gaseous oxidant and as catalyst therefor a binary metallic or multimetallic composition capable of oxidatively coupling methane.

  • Patent number: 4939310
Abstract: Methane is converted into higher hydrocarbons by contact at a temperature in the range from 500.degree. to 1000.degree. C. with a contact solid comprising a manganese oxide incorporating at least one of the elements tin, titanium, tungsten, tautalum, silicon, germanium, lead, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, boron, gallium, indium, a lanthanide or an actinide. The contact solid is preferably promoted by either an alkali or alkaline earth metal, for example sodium.
