  • Patent number: 8128962
Abstract: Liquid medicaments incorporate about 1.0-3.0% active benzoyl peroxide (BP) by weight in substantially fully solubilized form, while being substantially free of acetone and other harsh, dermatologically undesirable solvents. The novel compositions are produced by (a) creating an emulsion or slurry of BP in an emollient, topically acceptable ester, and (b) dissolving the emulsion or slurry in absolute alcohol. The medicaments may be used in the treatment of BP-responsive skin conditions in mammals, e.g., acne vulgaris or rosacea. The novel medicaments may be dispensed directly to the affected skin area through the use of an applicator device comprising a fluid reservoir associated with a foam applicator tip, or via a spray dispenser, atomizer or pump spray.

  • Patent number: 5098717
Abstract: A method of treating a pruritic skin area in a mammal by application to the affected area of a gel composition containing from about 60 to about 90% ethyl alcohol, from about 0.5 to about 30% water, at least one gelling agent and a pharmaceutically effective amount of a topically active, antipruritic, antihistaminic agent. The gel may be applied to the affected area from one to five times daily.

  • Patent number: 4883660
Abstract: Gel bases for pharmaceutical compositions comprise from about 0.5 to about 10.0% by weight ethoxylated (2 to 30 moles of ethoxylation) behenyl alcohol and from about 90 to 99.5% of a glycol solvent or from about 2.5 to about 10.0% by weight ethoxylated fatty alcohols having a chain length of from 16 to 21 carbon atoms and from 90 to about 97.5% of a glycol solvent. Preferred glycol solvents include propylene glycol and polyethylent glycols having an average molecular weight of about 200 to 800. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for topical, transmucosal and oral administration may be prepared utilizing the novel gel bases. Methods of administration of topically, systemically and orally active pharmaceutical agents utilizing the novel gel bases are also provided.
