  • Patent number: 6741168
Abstract: A device within an automobile comprises or includes a wireless communications controller which, upon detection of impact, attempts to establish a wireless communications link to each of any counterpart wireless communications controllers which are within vehicles also subject to a recent impact, and therefore presumably involved in the collision. Vehicle identification information and information collected regarding the collision, such as vehicle speed, location, direction of travel, impact direction and magnitude, point of impact, etc., are automatically exchanged between vehicles involved in the collision and may be later retrieved from either vehicle, preserving objective information for accident reconstruction by police and insurance companies.

  • Publication number: 20040085922
Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for providing automatic quality of service (QoS) management in a wireless mobile station. The apparatus comprises a quality of service (QoS) controller that is capable of providing a radio link to a wireless network. The radio link has a set of quality of service (QoS) parameters that support transmission and reception of data packets in a protocol that requires the set of quality of service (QoS) parameters. The quality of service (QoS) controller comprises a processor and a memory that contains quality of service (QoS) management application program, a quality of service (QoS) database, and a radio link database. For data packets that have a quality of service (QoS) requirement, the processor (1) accesses a suitable radio link from the radio link database, or (2) creates a new radio link and adds the new radio link to the radio link database.

  • Patent number: 6725056
Abstract: There is disclosed a provisioning system for use in a wireless network comprising a group of base stations that communicate with mobile stations. The provisioning system provisions unprovisioned mobile stations and prevents unprovisioned mobile stations from accessing an Internet protocol (IP) data network through the wireless network. The provisioning system comprises a provisioning controller that retrieve provisioning data from a provisioning server associated with the IP data network and causes a first base station to transmit the retrieved provisioning data to a first unprovisioned mobile station in a first traffic channel established between the first base station and the first unprovisioned mobile station. The provisioning system prevents any unprovisioned mobile station from accessing the wireless network except by means of a traffic channel, thereby preventing the unprovisioned mobile station from making an unauthorized access to the Internet via a data call to a base station.

  • Publication number: 20040071109
Abstract: A telecommunications device and network that provides TCP/IP communications over the entire data path, thereby simplifying the software call stack needed for a wireless device or to communicate with the network. The device eliminates the upper layers (non-access-stratum) of the handset call stack. It reduces the role of the radio layer to just providing link layer services. Furthermore, the handset call stack communicates with session control and billing & authorization servers over a public network such as the internet. Further, the wireless devices, as well as base stations and other components, communicate with session servers and billing & authorization servers over a public network, such as the Internet, eliminating any need for dedicated private-network connection between these components.
