  • Patent number: 10378500
Abstract: A pressurized fuel system for an engine includes a fuel pump in a pump protection device structured to drain pressurized fuel from a common rail to provide fuel flow through the fuel pump that limits cavitation. The device includes a valve mechanism having a first valve and a second valve that are movable to an open position and a closed position respectively, in response to valve opening and valve closing rail pressures. The active pressure range of the device may be a medium pressure range.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 27, 2016
Date of Patent: August 13, 2019
    Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.

  • Publication number: 20170335834
Abstract: A fluid system such as a fuel system includes a fluid supply and a pump coupled between the fluid supply and a plurality of fluid delivery devices. The pump can be a cryogenic pump such as for liquefied natural gas, with valve mechanisms to control hydraulic actuation of a piston used to pump the liquefied natural gas. An electrically conductive coil is coupled with the piston. Related methodology is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9638348
Abstract: System and methods for controlling a flow of fluid in a fuel system are disclosed. In an aspect, a gas admission system includes a gas admission valve assembly having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve configured to control a flow of fluid between the inlet and the outlet and a flow limiter assembly in fluid communication with the inlet of the gas admission valve assembly.

  • Publication number: 20170045022
Abstract: A fuel pump system configured to control a pressure pulse within a fuel system. The fuel pump system includes a conduit and a pump fluidly coupled to the conduit. The conduit has a conduit volume and is configured to contain fuel within. The pump includes a first pump stage in which the pump defines a maximum pump displacement and a second pump stage in which the pump defines a minimum pump displacement. The pump is configured to provide an output mass of fuel to the conduit when the pump transitions from the first pump stage to the second pump stage, causing pressure of the fuel within the conduit to pulse. The maximum pump displacement is set to a value defined by a ratio of the output mass of fuel per the conduit volume needed to maintain the pressure pulse in the conduit within a predetermined pressure pulse range.

  • Publication number: 20160348628
Abstract: The disclosure describes valve assemblies including a valve body movably disposed within a valve chamber and defining at least a portion of a cavity, wherein the cavity is used to regulate a position of the valve body between a first end and a second end of the valve chamber based on at least a pressure in the cavity.
