Abstract: A method, system, and device supporting installation of updates to software and/or firmware in memory of an electronic device. The updates may be accompanied by advertising, promotional and information content that is dynamically displayed to a user during processing of the update in the electronic device. The update information may be automatically generated based upon a list of all software components or packages already present on the electronic device, and may comprise software components for all dependencies of an application being installed by the update that are not already present on the electronic device.

Abstract: A device management system enables management of firmware, provisioning, and configuration information updates to of a plurality of mobile electronic devices via a wireless communication network. A user self-care interface allows subscribers to interact with the device management system to identify problems in the mobile electronic devices, and to schedule updates, via a web-based interface. Delivery of updates to the mobile electronic devices is managed so as to maintain device management system loading at acceptable levels, within scheduling constraints.

Abstract: The notification client in a mobile device is sent a notification message by a DM server to indicate the need to conduct a device management task on the mobile device. In response, the notification client displays the message received, which could be a multiple choice message. The user's response is also solicited. When the user responds, the user's response is communicated back to the DM server, or to another server. The user response may be communicated over one of the available communication means, such as SMS, a DM session over a OMA DM protocol, etc. In general, if a multiple choice message is displayed by the notification client, the user's selection is communicated to the DM server.

Abstract: A network for customer care and distribution of update packages to electronic devices makes it possible to efficiently manage and update firmware and software in devices. A provisioning server in the network employs provisioning means to update configuration, provision devices and manage devices. An electronic device capable of receiving these update packages comprises a update client that is capable of updating the device.

Abstract: A network for mass broadcast of update packages to electronic devices makes it possible to efficiently broadcast update packages for configuration, firmware and software updates. A broadcast server in the network employs broadcast means to broadcast update packages. An electronic device capable of receiving these broadcast update packages comprises a listening client that is capable of listening to a broadcast channel and downloading an update package broadcast by the broadcast server. The listening client makes use of a listening parameters that are set by the DM server in order to facilitate the download from the broadcast server.

Abstract: An electronic device with a handoff agent is capable of coordinating the update by one or more update agents in the electronic device. The handoff agent is capable of selectively updating an application software or firmware that is stored in non-volatile memory that may employ multiple FLASH chips, the handoff agent employing appropriate update agents, that each employs appropriate subsets of an update package that has been retrieved from an external system.

Abstract: Aspects of the present invention may be seen in a carrier network, employing the disclosed techniques and system. The network may be capable of conducting remote diagnostics of mobile handsets. The carrier network may have infrastructure to determine when known problems may occur in mobile handsets and determine how often they occur. In an embodiment of the present invention, when a customer reports in problems to a customer care representative, the carrier network may track such problems, install bug fixes or remotely diagnose the problem. The configuration parameters may be retrieved, analyzed and modified. When a customer reports errors or operational problems, the carrier may verify them or determine the nature and characteristics of such problems.

Abstract: Aspects of the present invention may be seen in a system and method for downloading update packages into an electronic device communicatively coupled to a carrier network. The system may facilitate the update of firmware/software in the electronic device. Different protocols may be utilized for discovery and download of update packages. Also, different protocols may be utilized for provisioning and for subsequent downloading of update packages.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a network having a customizable update generator and electronic devices having customizable updating software adapted to dynamically incorporate support for new instruction extensions in an existing instruction set. The customizable generator may be adapted to generate updates employing instruction sets executable by the customizable updating software in the electronic devices. The customizable updating software may be adapted to be dynamically enhanced and to support an enhanced instruction set. The updating software may be adapted to retrieve a complementary updating component during execution of an update. The electronic device may be adapted to employ at least one of several available and retrieved complementary update components during execution of an update.

Abstract: A mobile handset in a mobile services network, with access to a plurality of services including a firmware / software update service, is also capable of updating its update agent using an appropriate update package. The update package is retrieved from an update package repository via a management server. In one embodiment, the existing update agent is copied to a backup section before the update agent itself is updated. On the subsequent reboot, the new update agent is employed unless it is determined that it is corrupted or ineffective, in which case the old update agent is reactivated.
