  • Patent number: 8805385
Abstract: A method of controlling handover in wireless cellular networks of user equipment in a first cell unit which is to be disabled to a second cell unit which is to provide extended coverage for the, or part of the, first cell unit, where the cell unit of the first and second cell units is a cell or a cell sector, including selecting a part of the signal bandwidth or time-frequency resource units, previously designated for use in normal operation by the second cell unit, which does not overlap with that to be used by the first cell unit during the handover; and designating the selected part for use by the user equipment to be handed over from the first cell unit.

  • Publication number: 20080045238
Abstract: A wireless transmission method for use in a wireless communication system is provided. The system includes at least two communication apparatuses which may experience relative movement therebetween. One such communication apparatus is a source apparatus that is operable to transmit information to the destination apparatus, which is the other communication apparatus. The wireless transmission method includes, at two or more time instants, obtaining a measure of channel characteristics between the source apparatus and the destination apparatus. Furthermore, the method includes calculating a correlation factor between the at least two time-consecutive measures over time, and employing the correlation factor or a value derived therefrom as an estimate of relative movement between the source apparatus and the destination apparatus in determining a transmission parameter.

  • Publication number: 20080043710
Abstract: A transmission method for use in a multi-hop wireless communication system is provided. The method includes, for two apparatuses having overlapping transmission coverage areas, one of the two said apparatuses being an intermediate apparatus, transmitting a first transmission signal from a first one of those apparatuses in a first transmission window of a particular transmission interval and transmitting a second transmission signal from the second one of those apparatuses in a second transmission window of the particular transmission interval but not in said first transmission window, so that a communication apparatus located in the coverage areas of both the first and second apparatuses can receive said first transmission signal substantially without interference from said second transmission signal.

  • Publication number: 20060056346
Abstract: A method of obtaining a relative indicator for use in scheduling uplink transmissions from a plurality of source user equipments to a base station is disclosed. The relative indicator indicates the status of a user equipment in comparison to the status of the other user equipments, therefore allowing a user equipment to make more efficient scheduling decisions. The method comprises the steps of determining, for each user equipment, a first indicator which is indicative of a status of that user equipment, determining at least one second indicator from the first indicators obtained for all user equipments and broadcasting the or each second indicator to all user equipments. In this way, a significant reduction the downlink signalling load can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20050025254
Abstract: In an adaptive modulation and coding method one or more adjustable values are created (S1), each corresponding to at least one of a plurality of available modulation and coding levels applicable to a signal transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver, and each representing a change to the level(s) to which it corresponds. One or more of said adjustable values is/are adjusted in dependence upon whether or not the signal is received successfully by the receiver (S2-S5). One of said available modulation and coding levels is selected (S6-S8) to apply to the signal based on such an adjustable value. Such a method can enable the appropriate modulation and coding level to be selected even when the path and channel conditions vary. The method is applicable to selecting modulation and coding levels in a high-speed downlink packet access system of a wireless communication network.
