  • Publication number: 20160285230
Abstract: A technique is described for eliminating feedback light in a high-power optical device. An optical device is provided that generates, along an optical pathway, an output light at a desired signal wavelength, wherein the generation of the output light at the signal wavelength results in the generation of a feedback light at an undesired feedback wavelength. A port is provided at a selected location along the optical fiber pathway. The port is terminated with a length of a filter fiber, wherein the filter fiber has loss characteristics at the feedback wavelength that result in the elimination of feedback light from the optical fiber pathway through the port.

  • Patent number: 9325151
Abstract: A technique is described for providing compensation for the thermo-optic effect in a large-mode-area optical fiber, filter fiber, or the like. An optical fiber is provided having a refractive index profile with ambient temperature loss characteristics including a low loss for a first type of light and a high loss for a second type of light. A hot region of the fiber connected into an optical system is identified, in which a thermal index gradient is induced in the fiber. The thermal index gradient, in the absence of a compensating index gradient, would result in degradation of the fiber's ambient temperature loss characteristics. The fiber is arranged according to a layout having a position-varying bending diameter. Throughout the identified hot region, the fiber has a compensating bending diameter that induces a compensating index gradient in the fiber.

  • Patent number: 9166362
Abstract: In a Raman system, a primary laser source emits laser light at an initial wavelength, and a seed source emits a multi-wavelength seed laser light. The seed wavelengths correspond to a respective Stokes orders of the primary laser light. The primary laser light and the seed laser light are combined and fed into a Raman gain medium. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) causes the primary laser light to be converted into laser light at a selected target wavelength. The seeding of the primary light mediates the conversion process, so as to reduce spontaneous Raman scattering.
