A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller element to receive data from a web server to update one or more entries of an identity module coupled to the controller element. The data can be retrieved by the web server from a second communication device. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: A method for updating communications service parameters includes receiving, at a platform configured for speech recognition functionality and corresponding to a communications address associated with verbally updating communications service parameters, a voice instruction from a requester to update a communications service parameter. The voice instruction is translated into digital command data and the digital command data and the update to the communications service parameter are stored in a database. A change in a communications service corresponding to the update to the communications service parameter is implemented in near real-time.

Abstract: An automated system enables presenting bills and paying bills in a convenient, secure and timely manner. The automated system stores user information in a database, the user information including account information for each user. Based on the user account information, the system generates a bill for services rendered during a predetermined time period. Once the bill has been generated, the system automatically initiates communication with the user through a call generator. Once a communication line has been established, the system may authenticate the user and then provides option information to the user, the option information including at least one of a payment option, a detailed bill information option, and a deferred payment option.

Abstract: A method for providing a messaging service in a telecommunication system (900) includes providing a calling party with an option to leave a voice message (1010). If the calling party accepts the option, determining screening criteria for the called communication station (1018). In response to the screening criteria, the call is selectively completed to a messaging service (172).

Abstract: A system and method deliver audible caller identification information when standard Caller ID information is invalid or can not be provided, even when the called party connects to the network by private trunk group facilities. In one disclosed embodiment, a trunk group trigger associated with the called communication station is encountered, launching a termination attempt query. If standard caller identification information can not be provided for the calling party, the call will be routed to a privacy service to obtain the audible caller identification information.

Abstract: Systems and methods for transmitting a message to a telephone station are disclosed. Generally, a network element analyzes information related to an outgoing call.

Abstract: All calls terminating to a customer's directory number are intercepted. If caller identification information can be presented, the call is forwarded to a service node for disposition. The service node reconfigures signaling information of the call so that the call is not intercepted, then forwards the call to the subscriber's telephone. When the call is answered, the service node states the name or telephone number of the calling party which has been retrieved from the signaling information. The caller can decide whether to take the call, deny the call, send the call to voice mail or send a sales refusal message or other disposition option.

Abstract: A provisioning server implements a telephony service associated with a user, in which calls involving a directory number of the user are processed in accordance with the telephony service and customized call service data. The provisioning server interfaces a call processor with a web server and an interactive voice response (IVR) platform. The provisioning server includes a first interface for receiving the customized call service data from the web server, and a second interface for receiving at least portion of the customized call service data from the IVR platform. The provisioning server also includes a third interface for sending the customized call service data to be stored in a database accessible to the call processor. An instruction is received over the first interface or the second interface to activate the telephony service, in accordance with the customized call service data, via one of the web server and the IVR platform.

Abstract: A telecommunications service controls and monitors telephone calls by storing at a service control point (SCP) restricted telephone numbers and priority telephone numbers. Upon receiving call data relating to a call between a subscriber telephone number and an outside telephone number, the SCP determines whether the outside telephone number matches the restricted or priority telephone numbers. When the outside telephone number matches a restricted telephone number, the call is terminated and the SCP stores the call data. When the outside telephone number does not match a restricted telephone number, or matches a priority telephone number, the call is connected. The SCP transmits stored call data to a service management system, which is accessible by the subscriber via the Internet or an interactive voice response, for generating reports. The service further includes time schedules for implementing call restrictions and personal identification number for bypassing call restrictions.

Abstract: A system and method for providing information about a calling party to a called party is disclosed. Generally, a network element obtains information about a calling party when a telephone line of a called party is busy. The network element notifies the called party that the calling party is attempting to contact the called party and transmits an audible version of the information about the calling party to the called party without receiving an input from the called party.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing toll-free telephone services are disclosed. A disclosed system comprises a telephone network to route a telephone call placed to a toll-free telephone number to one of a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) endpoint, a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) endpoint or a dedicated trunk endpoint based on a state of at least one variable.

Abstract: A service node is used in the implementation of a call-transfer service in which a service call is transferred to a second agent from a first agent. A code receiver receives from a service control point, via a data link, at least one subscriber-defined call-transfer feature code that can be invoked by the first agent. Abstract: A method and apparatus for verifying call waiting information in a communication system is particularly well suited for correcting mispronunciation of caller identification information provided for a call waiting call. A current pronunciation of the call waiting information is provided to the calling party who is prompted to change the current pronunciation. The system receives a new pronunciation of the call waiting information and stores information about the new pronunciation for subsequent retrieval.

Abstract: A telecommunications service implements an account code reporting feature by storing an account code associated with a subscriber at a service control point (SCP) in the public switched telephone network (PSTN). When a call is initiated from the subscriber's terminal, the SCP receives outgoing call data, including the subscriber's telephone number, a called party number and an account code entered from the subscriber's terminal. The SCP determines whether the call is subject to the account code reporting service and, if so, stores the call data. The SCP transmits the call data to a service management system accessible by the subscriber via a graphical user interface through a packet switched data network and an interactive voice response through the PSTN. The call is subject to the account code reporting service when the called party number is in the same local access and transport area as the subscriber's telephone number.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for providing an enhanced call waiting announcement to a called party that is busy on a first call and receives a second call. Information provided by a second calling party is recorded and played back to the called party after the first call is over. The called party is not interrupted during the duration of the first call.

Abstract: A telecommunications service translates an abbreviated dialing code into a toll free number, routes the call to an interexchange carrier, and manages the billing associated with the call. A billing system processes the billing such that a subscriber of the abbreviated dialing code service is billed for the call rather than a calling party.
