  • Patent number: 5993961
Abstract: A multilayer adhesive construction and method for production of said construction are provided. The construction comprises a facestock, a barrier layer on the facestock, and an adhesive layer on the barrier layer. The barrier layer comprises a pressure-sensitive adhesive which inhibits the migration of mobile species such as oils, resins, tackifiers, or plasticizers from the adhesive layer into the facestock or from the facestock into the adhesive layer. This migration of mobile ingredients often manifests itself as swelling or hardening of the facestock which, in turn, leads to wrinkling of the adhesive construction and general loss of adhesion. The multilayer adhesive construction of the invention thus improves adhesion and the appearance of the label by inhibiting wrinkling and/or staining.

  • Patent number: 5686504
Abstract: Pressure sensitive adhesives that cure to a high cohesive strength at room and elevated temperatures, and a method for making such adhesives, are provided. The adhesives comprise an acrylic copolymer compounded with a pigment and a hydrogen-abstracting photoinitiator. A tackifier and/or multifunctional acrylate or methacrylate can also be added. The acrylic copolymer is prepared from a substantially acid-free monomer mixture of at least one alkyl acrylate and a tertiary amine-containing monomer, such as DMAPMA. Other monomers, including polar vinylic monomers and diesters of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids are, preferably, also included. Despite the presence of titanium dioxide or other pigments, the compounded copolymers are UV-cured to a high cohesive strength through the combination of tertiary amine functional groups and hydrogen-abstracting photoinitiators, which form synergistic pairs when irradiated, leading to free radical formation and polymer cross-linking.

  • Patent number: 4549063
Abstract: An adhesive laminate, including a base web having a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive and a backing removably adhered to the coating of adhesive for protecting and containing the adhesive, is described. The backing has one or more non-linear, discontinuous score lines formed, preferably, with a laser. A sine-wave, geometric pattern is also preferred. The non-linear, discontinuous score line enables a crack-and-peel feature to be introduced to the laminate backing.
