  • Patent number: 4601188
Abstract: A pair of work rolls is provided in a strip mill of the type having one or more back-up rolls for each work roll. Each work roll comprises a tubular body having an axial bore of uniform diameter throughout its length. The exterior surface of the tubular body has a cylindrical roll face of uniform diameter, terminating at its ends in neck portions of lesser diameter. The ends of the body are closed by removable fluid-tight plugs. A cylindrical mandrel of the same length as the roll face is mounted in the bore of each work roll and normally has an interference fit therein. The mandrels of the upper and lower work rolls are relieved at opposite ends. The remainder of the work roll bore at either end of the mandrel defines a pair of volumes in each work roll, filled with hydraulic fluid and individually controllable as to hydraulic pressure. When a strip is to be rolled, the mandrel of each roll is shifted to align its relief with one of the strip edges.

  • Patent number: 4592404
Abstract: A process and apparatus for converting a stream of desilized and desulfurized pig iron into steel plates of unlimited length. A spray caster is employed utilizing a substantially cylindrical heat-absorbing target surface and a projector rotatable about a vertical axis substantially co-axial with the axis of the cylindrical target surface. A non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained about the projector and within the space surrounded by the target surface. A pulverulent oxide, chosen from the class consisting of mill scale, iron oxide, the oxide of an alkaline metal which completely evaporates at the temperature of the molten pig iron, the oxide of a desired alloying metal and combinations thereof, is injected into the molten stream of pig iron. The molten stream of pig iron is caused to flow vertically upon the projector, as the projector is rapidly rotated.

  • Patent number: 4552299
Abstract: In the production of metal- and other strip materials in continuous lengths and in several operations or processing facilities, such strip is wound into coils of finite length after each operation, then transported to the next operation and again welded into one continuous web, coil after coil.In order to avoid this wasteful practice a method and apparatus is disclosed which consists in feeding said strip emerging from one operation, without cutting it, directly into a variable capacity accumulator and feeding it out again from said accumulator into the apparatus of the following operation at the speed that such operation requires.

  • Patent number: 4512384
Abstract: The present invention is an improvement over, and an adaptation to continuous casting, of known processes in which a molten metal such as steel is atomized under non-oxydizing conditions and projected at high velocity against a suitable target. The distance to the target is such that the atomized particles solidify on their way and hit the target in a solid, yet still plastic, state to be welded onto said target by their kinetic energy. Applicant has found a way to adapt such process to continuous operation, and more particularly, to production of wide slabs of great length and relatively small thickness, say, typical 1.5".times.60" section and achieving that at great speeds of operation, such as 100 to 500 tons per hour which speed makes it possible to place it upstream of a continuous hot strip mill and thus produce, say, 0.060".times.60" strips in one continuous operation, from molten metal. (Such mills cannot maintain their thermal balance if the speed of the workpiece is too slow).

  • Patent number: 4505438
Abstract: A high capacity single coil strip accumulator for transient storage of longitudinally advancing metallic or other strip material usually supplied in coils which must be welded end-to-end to form a continuous web which is to be fed at uninterrupted speed to downstream processing equipment, e.g., annealing. The single revolving accumulator coil is characterized by a variable number of convolutions and variable inner and outer diameters, with provision for continuously paying out of strip from its outer convolution, while intermittently adding new strip to its inner convolution. An independently rotatable cage with an axially locatable uncoiler for paying-off strip from a supply coil to said inner convolution has affixed thereto a joining device such as a butt welder, in the path of the strip from the uncoiler to the inner convolution.

  • Patent number: 4497452
Abstract: A variable capacity strip accumulator for steel strip travelling continuously from upstream reels of supply to a downstream treating or processing station, said accumulator having adjacent spiral coils rotatable on a common axis for accumulating a supply of the strip for continuous feeding cut of the accumulator despite a temporary stoppage of supply. In the execution of this objective, the convolutions of the two coaxial spiral coils of opposite hand are connected together by a transition curve into one continuous web. Strip guides for said curve first slightly twist the strip in the same direction as its first spiral to an extent of approximately 90.degree., while withdrawing it from the interior of the latter in the direction away from said coils and without substantially departing from its radius of curvature, crossing the axis at the farthest point. Continuing at the same curvature and rate of twist of 90.degree.

  • Patent number: 4288042
Abstract: An accumulating apparatus for storing a variable length of strip material in which said strip is in the form of two adjacent spiral coils mounted on a common horizontal axis. The rolling coils of the accumulator are identical in size but are wound in opposite directions with their inner ends connected to each other by a bridging portion of the strip material which rotates in opposite directions in dependence upon the relative preponderance of the rate of accumulation and/or withdrawal of the strip material into and from the apparatus. Each of the spiral coils is supported on the interior thereof by a system of angularly spaced rollers capable of assuming circular orbits of varying diameters corresponding to the inner diameters of said coils, to control the sag of successive lengths of the strip between the rollers, which facilitates the interface creeping between the successive turns of the coils. This effect may be enhanced by applying tractive forces to the supporting rollers, if found desirable.

  • Patent number: 4022073
Abstract: In a beam-backed cluster-type strip mill each roll is driven separately from a vertical motor placed on top of the housing through a floating right-angle gearbox. The gearbox is keyed onto one end of each roll and is so suspended that only pure torque is transmitted to the roll and the reactions as well as the weight of the box are absorbed by the suspension means.Roll oscillating mechanism, forcing the rolls to travel axially back and forth far enough to efface marks left by the backing casters, is incorporated in the gearbox. This drive possesses substantial advantages over conventional drives, which make the mill more accessible, and save space. Moreover it makes possible various roll configurations by adding supplementary rolls to the cluster pattern thereby increasing the range and scope of the mill.
