  • Patent number: 4861504
Abstract: An oil additive, particularly useful for railroad engines having reduced lacquer forming tendencies characterized by a novel alkaline earth phenate in which the normal tendency to form lacquers is reduced by the substitution of electron-donating groups; such as sulfur or tertiary amines for the secondary amine in the structural formula.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 25, 1988
Date of Patent: August 29, 1989
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
    Inventor: Tai S. Chao
  • Patent number: 4434064
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for stabilizing a graphite in-oil-dispersion by means of a fracture induced oxidation of graphite particles to produce a composition suitable as a constituent of a lubricating oil composition. The oxygen content of the graphite particles is at least about 1% by weight of the total weight of the ground graphite particle including oxygen.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 4, 1981
Date of Patent: February 28, 1984
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
Inventors: Tai S. Chao, Aubrey C. Smith, Jr., Frederic D. Smies
  • Patent number: 4372861
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for providing a shear stable graphite-in-oil dispersion by means of selected non-polymeric dispersing agents. The oxygen content of the graphite particles is at least about 1% by weight of the total weight of the ground graphite particle including oxygen.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 4, 1981
Date of Patent: February 8, 1983
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
Inventors: Tai S. Chao, Aubrey C. Smith, Jr., Frederic D. Smies
  • Patent number: 4284402
Abstract: A method and apparatus for modifying the flow pattern of post ignition combustion products of a flame, preferably an oil fueled and air sustained flame, are disclosed which substantially reduces the concentration of NO.sub.x emissions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 2, 1979
Date of Patent: August 18, 1981
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
Inventors: Jesse E. Sheets, Bernard C. Vitchus, Tai S. Chao, Martin F. Zygowicz
  • Patent number: 4264461
Abstract: Hydrocracked lubricating oils are effectively stabilized against deterioration caused by light by the inclusion of at least one of certain substantially aliphatic amine components. Such substantially aliphatic amine components provide outstanding inhibition relative to aromatic amine components.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 1979
Date of Patent: April 28, 1981
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
Inventors: Tai S. Chao, Aubrey C. Smith, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4104036
Abstract: An improved fuel composition comprising a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline boiling range, a minor amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of Group VIII metals and mixtures thereof capable of improving the octane number rating of the composition, a minor amount of at least one aliphatic alcohol containing from about 1 to about 8 carbon atoms per molecule; and a minor amount of at least one organic peroxy component containing from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per molecule wherein the compound and the combination of alcohol and peroxy component are present in mutually activating amounts to improve the octane number rating of the fuel composition. An improved method for fueling an internal combustion engine using the composition described above is also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 8, 1976
Date of Patent: August 1, 1978
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
Inventors: Tai S. Chao, Ernest H. Owston, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4039300
Abstract: An improved composition for fueling an internal combustion engine equipped with at least one carburetor which comprises a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline boiling range, a minor amount of at least one detergent, and a minor amount of mineral oil of lubricating viscosity comprising at least about 50% by weight of aromatic hydrocarbons having an average molecular weight in the range from about 300 to about 700 the detergent and oil both being present in the composition in amounts sufficient to inhibit formation of deposits on the carburetor. An improved method for fueling such an engine using the composition described above is also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 3, 1974
Date of Patent: August 2, 1977
    Assignee: Atlantic Richfield Company
