  • Patent number: 6244732
Abstract: There is provided a lamp composed of a light source, a tilted ellipsoidal rotation surface reflector, and an annular cylindrical lens. The tilted ellipsoidal rotation surface reflector is formed of an ellipsoidal rotation surface emerging when an ellipsoid, having a first focal line located on the center axis of the light source and adjacent the light source and a second focal point located on an oblique line passing through the first focal point and tilted appropriately from the light-source center axis and assumed on a plane containing the light-source center axis and the oblique line, is rotated around the light-source center axis. The annular cylindrical lens is obtained by rotating, around the light-source center axis, the cross-sectional configuration of an aspheric lens having a focal point adjacent the second focal point of the ellipsoid and having an optical axis nearly parallel to the light-source center axis.

  • Patent number: 6109772
Abstract: A lamp including a light source, a petaline reflector, and aspheric lenses. The petaline reflector is formed of a plurality of reflecting surface units combined radially around the center axis of the light source. Each of the reflecting surface units is obtained by cutting, radially around the center axis, a portion from a spheroid having a first focal point located on the center axis and adjacent the light source and a second focal point located on a line passing through the first focal point and tilted appropriately from the center axis such that the cut portion spans a range of 15.degree. to 60.degree. around the center axis. The aspheric lenses are disposed to correspond to the respective second focal points of the reflecting surface units of the petaline reflector and converge reflected light beams from the respective reflecting surface units. Shades for forming a light distribution pattern are disposed at the respective near-focal points of the aspheric lenses.

  • Patent number: 6094008
Abstract: A discharge lamp for an automotive vehicle including a discharge bulb and an outer cover tube for covering the discharge bulb. The discharge bulb is composed of a discharge chamber portion, a pair of seal portions for sealing both ends of the discharge chamber portion, and a pair of discharge electrodes held in respective ones of the seal portions. At the end of each seal portion adjacent to the discharge chamber portion, a taper portion is provided, which is narrowest near the discharge chamber portion, and which defines an angle with respect to a tube axis of the discharge bulb of 45 degrees or less. A curvature of a tube wall of the discharge chamber portion, is substantially constant. A ratio of the minimum thickness to the maximum thickness of the tube wall measured within that angle is between 1 and 0.8. The discharge bulb and the outer cover tube are in contact, with the portion of said discharge chamber portion having the maximum outer diameter being in contact with the outer cover tube.

  • Patent number: 5971574
Abstract: An automobile headlight including a single movable light source which does not change the angle of its optical axis relative to the optical axis of the reflector. The light source is coupled to an apparatus capable of changing the position of the light source depending on the driving state of the automobile. The headlight has sufficient light distribution patterns for multiple driving conditions, such as when the automobile is traveling straight ahead, by-passing another vehicle, or carrying a heavy load, without changing the angle of the optical axis of the light source relative to the optical axis of the reflector. This allows the driver to maintain good visibility while prolonging the life of the headlight and reducing its overall size.

  • Patent number: 5711590
Abstract: An improved headlight having variable light distribution is provided, where said headlight comprises a reflector divided into an upper movable light distribution reflector and a lower fixed light distribution reflector by a horizontal line located 10 to 30 mm above the optical axis of the light source and the reflector, of which said movable light distribution reflector is rotatable around a vertical rotary axis practically crossing the optical axis of the light source and said fixed light distribution reflector is designed to reflect 50 to 60% of the total quantity of light applied to the reflector. With such an arrangement, the swerving side of the automobile is satisfactorily illuminated by the movable light distribution reflector while a desired frontal light distribution pattern of the headlight is ensured by the fixed light distribution reflector because the two reflectors provide a substantially equal quantity of light.
