  • Publication number: 20020098388
Abstract: An abrasive tape on a contact member is urged against the surface of a rotating substrate for a recording medium. Abrasive grains are held on the abrasive tape, for example. The abrasive grains serve to form fine scratches on the surface of the substrate. The fine scratches correspond to a texture. The contact member is moved in the radial or centrifugal direction of the substrate. The rotation rate of the substrate gets slower in response to the movement of the contact member in the centrifugal direction. A constant relative velocity can always be established between the contact member and the rotating substrate. A constant surface roughness can be established over the entire surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6410103
Abstract: A memory disc for use in a memory disc, comprising a lubricant layer which consists essentially of a non-fluid bonding lubricant, or comprises a lubricant layer which contains at least 90% of non-fluid bonding lubricant. Such memory disc is fabricated through steps of: forming a protective carbon layer; coating a lubricant on a disc substrate; subjecting the resultant substrate to an adhesion treatment to form a bonding layer of lubricant adhering to the disc substrate; and removing a free fluid layer of the lubricant remaining on the bonding layer. Thus, the memory disc has essentially no fluid component that can flow during read/write operations.

  • Patent number: 6299946
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a recording medium includes the steps of: a) providing an underlayer on a substrate; b) providing a magnetic layer on the under layer; c) providing a protection layer of amorphous carbon on the magnetic layer; and d) providing a lubrication layer of fluorine on the protection layer, the lubrication layer including a bonding layer part which is strongly bonded to the protection layer and a mobile layer part which is not strongly bonded to the protection layer. The method further includes the steps of: e) implementing a UV curing process on the surface of the protection layer between the step c) and d), so that a ratio of the bonding layer part in the lubrication layer is increased.

  • Patent number: 6246538
Abstract: A head slider is composed of a substrate having a transducer on its outflow end, a rail plane formed on a surface near both sides of the substrate facing a magnetic disk. The head slider further includes a plurality of projection elements formed on the rail plane. When the slider is floating over the magnetic disk, the distance between the projection elements and the magnetic disk is greater than the distance between the outflow end of the slider and the magnetic disk.

  • Patent number: 6243233
Abstract: A magnetic head slider has a plurality of rail planes to generate a floating force by using an air flow passing through a region between a group of the rail planes and a magnetic disk rotated at a constant rotating speed, and the slider floats up into the air according to the floating force. Also, the slider has a first pad arranged near an air inflow end of one rail plane and a second pad arranged near an air outflow end of the same or another rail plane, and a height of the first pad and a height of the second pad respectively range from 20 to 50 nm. Therefore, a coefficient of a friction between the pads and the magnetic disk can be reduced, and the wear of the pads can be prevented. Also, the contact of an electro-magnetic transducing device attached to the air outflow end of the rail plane with the magnetic disk can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 6072663
Abstract: A magnetic head slider having an air inlet end surface and an air outlet end surface, including a pair of rails formed on a disk opposing surface opposed to a magnetic disk, each of the rails having a flat air bearing surface for generating a flying force during rotation of the magnetic disk and a tapering surface formed continuously to the air bearing surface so as to meet the air inlet end surface; and an electromagnetic transducer formed on the air outlet end surface at a position where one of the rails is formed. The magnetic head slider further includes a pair of projections each formed continuously on the tapering surface and the air bearing surface of each rail, each of the projections extending to a peripheral edge of the air bearing surface.
