A laser diode module has a heat sink and optical coupling portion mounted directly or indirectly on a mounting surface of a thermo electrical cooler. A laser diode chip and the optical coupling portion are located on the same side of the mounting surface along the emitting direction of a laser beam emitted from the laser diode chip, with respect to a first center line (Lcpp) intersecting perpendicularly with a tangential plane tangent to the mounting surface of the thermo electrical cooler at the center thereof and/or a second center line passing through the center of the mounting surface of the thermo electrical cooler and perpendicular to both the first center line and an axis representative of the emitting direction of the laser beam.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an optical device, having high reliability, which is free from any breakage of optical fibers in line with changes in temperature. A laser diode element 1 is disposed in a metal-made package 9, the tip end side of a lensed fiber 2 having a lens 3 formed at the tip end side of the optical fiber is inserted into and fixed at the first ferrule 5, and the first ferrule 5 is fixed on the base 10. The second ferrule 6 is provided at the rear end side of the first ferrule 5 via a spacing, and is inserted into and fixed in the insertion portion 20 of the package 9. And, an intermediate portion of the lensed fiber 2 is inserted into and fixed at the second ferrule 6. A deflection 14 is provided at the lensed fiber 2 between the first ferrule 5 and the second ferrule 6, shown in FIG. 1A, at a temperature lower than the upper limit of the environmental temperature for use.

    Abstract: A laser diode module of the invention can release heat radiated from a laser diode efficiently, and is of small size and small power consumption. An outer surface (15) of a bottom plate (2) of a package (7) is formed to be a board mounting surface to be mounted on a printed board (20). A base (6) is fixed to the inner wall surface (9) side of the top plate (8) of the package (7) and a laser diode (3) is fixed to the base (6). In the invention, an exemplary configuration where heat radiated from the laser diode is released effectively is formed by disposing a heat radiating unit (4) on the outer surface (16) side of the top plate (8) of the package (7), for example. The heat radiating unit (4) is formed by disposing a plurality of heat radiating fins (5) arranged at intervals, for example. The configuration containing the heat radiating unit (4) releases heat radiated from the laser diode (3) through the base (6), the top plate (8) and the heat radiating unit (4).
