Patent number: 11218960Abstract: There is provided support mechanisms for at least one adding and removing a cell from operation in a heterogeneous radio network having a first type of basic cell for providing basic radio coverage and a second type of cell associated to a basic cell as a capacity enhancing cell. A capacity enhancing cell is selectively switched on and off. When the capacity enhancing cell is shut down the cell does not exist over the air while cell configuration information is kept. When the capacity enhancing cell is switched on the cell becomes available again over the air interface. An indication of shut-down and a wake-up call message for switch-on of the capacity enhancing cell are communicated between a base station serving the capacity enhancing cell and a base station serving the basic cell. In this way energy savings can be supported without disrupting service availability.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2014Date of Patent: January 4, 2022Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Elena Myhre, Tarmo Kuningas

Patent number: 9974113Abstract: Systems and methods that provide improved success rates for connection reestablishments in a cellular communications system are disclosed. Embodiments of a radio access node in a cellular communications system enabling connection reestablishment for a wireless device to a target cell controlled by the radio access node are disclosed. In some embodiments, the radio access node is operative to: (a) perform a wireless device context fetch for a context for the wireless device from two or more candidate source cells of the wireless device in response to a connection reestablishment request from the wireless device and (b) receive a wireless device context from at least one of the two or more candidate source cells of the wireless device in response to performing the wireless device context fetch. By performing multiple context fetches, the radio access node mitigates the problem of physical cell identifier ambiguity.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2017Date of Patent: May 15, 2018Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Stephen Grant, Tarmo Kuningas

Publication number: 20160360440Abstract: The present invention relates to resource management in a telecommunication system. In particular the invention relates to detection and estimation of transport network load and optimization of transport network resources. According to the method and arrangement of the invention a serving node engaged in admission control identifies a transport network interface from which transport load measurements are required for the admission control, and a target radio network node related to the identified transport network interface. The serving radio network node configure the target radio network node to perform and report measurements on the transport network interface.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2016Publication date: December 8, 2016Inventors: Muhammad Kazmi, Tarmo Kuningas

Patent number: 9491615Abstract: Additional information is included in or used to generate a positioning reference signal to enable detection of a cell identifier “collision” between two different cells associated with two or more base stations. In one example embodiment, a user equipment terminal detects the collision using the additional information included in or used to generate positioning reference signals sent by two or more base stations and reports the collision to the network, and the network resolves the collision by assigning a different cell identifier to one of the colliding cells.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2009Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Dirk Gerstenberger, Tarmo Kuningas, Daniel Larsson

Patent number: 9232430Abstract: A method of controlling the volume of user-plane traffic on the Iub or Iub/Iur interface between a Radio Network Controller and a Node B of a UMTS Radio Access Network during periods of overload. The method comprises, for individual uplink or downlink connections established over the Iub or Iub/Iur interface, monitoring at the Radio Network Controller the late arrival of frames at the Radio Network Controller or at the Node B transmitted over the Iub or Iub/Iur interface, and based on the results of said monitoring, causing a reduction in the Iub or Iub/Iur load for a connection when appropriate.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2015Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Mats Sågfors, Paul Teder, Tarmo Kuningas

Patent number: 9226204Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and arrangement for cell type information sharing between neighbor base stations in a telecommunications system. One embodiment comprises informing a second radio base station serving a second cell and having a neighbor relation with a first cell served by a first base station, of at least the cell type of the first cell. This is accomplished by adding the cell type information to a set of information to be signaled to the second base station, and then signalling the set of information to the second base station.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2014Date of Patent: December 29, 2015Assignee: LENOVO GROUP LIMITEDInventor: Tarmo Kuningas

Patent number: 9144113Abstract: The invention comprises a method for migrating control plane data transport between a control node (5) and a base station (5) controlled by the control node from an old and currently used transport technology, e.g. an ATM based transport option, to a new transport technology, e.g. an IP based transport option. A protocol stack for the new transport technology is created (31) in the control node (5). In a similar manner, a protocol stack for the new transport technology is created (31) in the base station (7). Thereafter, a connection based on the new transport technology is formed (33) between the control node and the base station. Then the new transport technology is used (39) on the formed connection for at least one new control plane message between the control node to the base station.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2008Date of Patent: September 22, 2015Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Marten Norman, Tarmo Kuningas
