    Abstract: A method of adjusting a surface potential sensor for measuring the surface potential of a photoconductive element, or image carrier, included in an electrophotographic image forming apparatus. The method uses the substrate of the photoconductive element as a reference plate in the event of adjustment. Before the photoconductive element is used as a reference plate, the element is left unused for a period of time long enough for the element to recover from fatigue. Then, a reference voltage is applied to the substrate, and the resulting potential of the surface of the photoconductive element is used as a reference value for adjustment.
