  • Patent number: 8754179
Abstract: The present discovery uses monomers which contain reversible photo-crosslinkable groups in addition to primary polymerizable groups. The mechanical properties of these materials and the reversibility of the photo-activated shape memory effect demonstrate the effectiveness of using photo-irradiation to effect change in modulus and shape memory effect. In the preferred embodiment the reaction mixture includes a photo-reactive monomer comprising a photo reactive group and a polymerizable group; a second monomer, which is more preferably a mixture of monomers, which are acrylate based; a multi-functional crosslinking agent, preferably 1,6 hexanediol diacrylate (HDODA); an initiator, preferably a free radical initiator; and a fifth, optional, component which is a modifying polymer. The mixture of the second monomer, crosslinking agent, and initiator comprise the base polymer matrix into which the photo-reactive monomer is incorporated.

  • Patent number: 8710166
Abstract: The present discovery shows how to make a self-crosslinking SMP. Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) can be formulated as a castable coating. This process allows the polymer to dissolve in solvent, and as the solvent evaporates the polymers self-crosslink at room temperature in air, creating a copolymer coating wherein the copolymer coating is an SMP. This technology has coating applications where shape memory would be an asset: from shape memory textile and fabric to self-healing coatings for vehicles and morphing skins for aircraft.

  • Patent number: 8039572
Abstract: Cyanate ester shape memory polymers (SMP). The polymers are preferably formed via reaction of a multifunctional cyanate ester and a mono functional cyanate ester and exist, in one inventive aspect, in the form of a cross-linked thermoset network. Optional catalysts and structural modifiers may be added to the reaction moieties to help control the glass transition temperature of the resulting SMP to greater than 0° C., preferably from about 150° C.-300° C.

  • Patent number: 8008409
Abstract: The currently disclosed device is a novel poly(azidoaminoether)-based energetic polymer utilizing a chemical design that possesses great versatility in tailoring properties such as endothermicity, oxygen balance, flexibility, toughness, and crystallinity. Furthermore, this new chemical design will also be compatible with current polyisocyanate curing chemistry. These attributes will give such novel polymers great potential in meeting the demands of a highly energetic, yet insensitive propellant binder. This material's tailorable mechanical properties and oxygen balance as well as its backwards compatibility with current diisocyanate crosslinking methods make this novel polymer an ideal energetic binder material for use in a variety of munition systems.

  • Patent number: 7276195
Abstract: Shape memory polymers prepared by copolymerizing two monomers, which each separately produce polymers characterized by different glass transition temperatures in the presence of a multi-functional monomer whereby the copolymer formed is cross-linked during the polymerization to form a thermoset network. The transition temperature of the final polymers is adjusted by the ratio of the monomers selected, to from about 150° C. to about 270° C., while the degree of crosslinking controls the rubbery modulus plateau. The shape memory polymers can be processed as castable formulations in the form of bulk articles, coatings and films. The invention also relates to the articles of manufacture thereof and methods of the preparation and use thereof.
