  • Patent number: 6069620
Abstract: The present invention relates to a driving method of a liquid crystal display device using an OCB (optically compensated birefringence) which realizes a wide view-field angle and high-speed response, and has an object of providing a driving method of a liquid crystal display device which method causes an OCB cell to transfer from a splay orientation state to a bend orientation state in short time.In a driving method of a liquid crystal display device using an OCB cell, gate on/off periods of a TFT are controlled at a start of a display operation, each pixel is caused to have bend orientation by a strong electric field that is generated between a gate electrode and a common electrode, and, at the same time, a voltage that is higher than that to generate an electric field necessary to maintain bend orientation is applied between a display electrode and the common electrode, to thereby effect transfer to bend orientation in short time.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device of high display quality and superior sharpness is presented. Large bumps and small bumps made of synthetic resin material are formed on a glass substrate. The bottom diameters of the large bumps and small bumps are defined, for example, at 5 .mu.m and 3 .mu.m, respectively, and their interval is at least, for example, 2 .mu.m or more. Covering these bumps and filling the recesses among the bumps, a smoothing film is formed. On the smoothing film, a reflective metal film made of metal material such as aluminum is formed. • Patent number: 5039185
Abstract: A homeotropic liquid crystal display device compensated for the anisotropy of the homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal layer, by anisotropy compensating means comprising at least two anisotropic (e.g. uniaxial) films having their optic axes disposed to form a right angle in a plane parallel to the substrate to form an optically negative activity in the direction perpendicular to the substrate. This optically negative activity is so selected to compensate the positive optical anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystal when oriented homeotropically in the absence of electric field.

  • Patent number: 4396250
Abstract: A guest-host type liquid crystal display device not requiring the use of external polarizers, comprises: two guest-host type liquid crystal cells which are superimposed one upon the other and which are constructed in a manner that the liquid crystal molecules contained in the respective cells and located close to the boundary between the two cells are aligned in a direction parallel to the plane of the boundary, but that the direction of alignment of the molecules in one cell is perpendicular to that in the other cell when a voltage is applied, or alternatively when no voltage is applied. In case the perpendicular state is realized when a voltage is applied, the molecules are caused to be rearranged in a direction normal to the substrate by the removal of the applied voltage, whereas in case said state is realized when no voltage is applied, such rearrangement can be achieved by the application of a voltage.
