    Abstract: According to an aspect, a display apparatus includes: a plurality of light sources; a display device irradiated with light from the light sources; and a controller. The display area includes a plurality of partial areas corresponding to the light sources on a one-to-one basis. Each of the partial areas includes a first area and a second area, the first area being irradiated with light from a first light source that corresponds thereto, and the second area being irradiated with light from the first light source and a second light source adjacent to the first light source. The controller controls an operation of the first light source based on whether the first area requires the light from the first light source and whether the second area obtains light required for display output by receiving the light from the second light source.

The signal processing unit stores an expanded color space, acquires an expansion coefficient for expanding a color displayed by the image display panel to a color that can be extended in the expanded color space, obtains output signals of the first sub-pixel to the third sub-pixel based on at least input signals of the first sub-pixel to the third sub-pixel and the expansion coefficient, and outputs the output signals to the first sub-pixel to the third sub-pixel. The expanded color space is a color space that can extend a color the brightness of which is higher than brightness in a standard color space.

The signal processing unit stores an expanded color space, determines maximum set brightness as an upper limit value of brightness displayable within a range of the brightness in the expanded color space so that the maximum set brightness increases as a panel average input value decreases, determines an input expansion coefficient for expanding the color displayed by the image display panel to a color of the maximum set brightness, obtains the output signal of the first to forth sub-pixel based on the input signal of the first to third sub-pixel and the input expansion coefficient. The expanded color space is a color space that can extend a color of brightness higher than that in a standard color space.

The light source controller determines the amount of light emitted from each light source corresponding to a corresponding one of the partial areas based on luminance of light required for the corresponding partial area. The display controller performs first correction and second correction when the amounts of light emitted from two light sources corresponding to two adjacent partial areas are different.
