  • Patent number: 8128776
Abstract: A container lid is formed as a flexible laminate of an upper layer and a lower layer and having a built-in opening feature. A pair of radially spaced concentric lines of weakness are formed in the laminate, an outer one of the lines of weakness being formed in the upper layer and an inner one of the lines of weakness being formed in the lower layer. The upper and lower layers in an annular region between the lines of weakness are readily peeled apart. The upper and lower layers outside the annular region are laminated together with an adhesive providing a bond with a greater peel strength than that required to separate the layers in the annular region.

  • Patent number: 7703625
Abstract: A lid for a container having a built-in opening feature comprises a flexible laminate comprising an upper layer and a lower layer, a pair of radially spaced concentric lines of weakness being formed in the upper and lower layers, respectively, wherein the upper and lower layers in an annular region between the lines of weakness are readily peeled apart, and wherein the upper and lower layers outside the annular region are laminated together with an adhesive providing a bond with a greater peel strength than that required to separate the layers in the annular region. An integral tab is formed in the upper layer by a U-shaped cut line. A distal end of the tab opposite from the two ends of the cut line is within an adhesive-free region of the laminate. • Patent number: 7703664
Abstract: The present invention relates to composite paperboard containers and methods for making the same. Specifically, the present invention includes a curvilinear container comprising a tubular body formed convolutely or via spiral winding from a single paperboard ply or multiple plies as commonly known in the art. The tubular body includes opposing ends that can be sealed by paperboard, metallic, plastic, or membrane-type end closures so as to preserve the consumable products typically enclosed by the container. The curvilinear container includes a tubular body having a curvilinear portion wherein the diameter of the tubular body varies along the length of the curvilinear portion. A plurality of radially projecting ribs are distributed about the circumference of the curvilinear portion as collection areas for excess tube wall material and thereby accommodate reduction of the tube wall diameter within the curvilinear portion.

  • Patent number: 6662827
Abstract: A membrane type pressure relief valve for packaging containers. The valve comprises a plastic overlay that is formed in a way that causes the center portion of the valve to be pre-stressed when applied to a base sheet or a package wall. The forming of the overlay and its subsequent deformation after application to the base sheet or package wall causes the overlay to act as a mechanical assist to close the valve when the valve oil does not fully force the valve closed.

  • Patent number: 5788112
Abstract: A container and end adapted for closing and sealing the container with a double-seaming operation is provided which permits evacuating and back-flushing of gases out of and into the container while the end is in a seated and unseamed position on the container during the closing operation. The end includes a central circular panel, a chuck wall surrounding an outer periphery of the central panel and extending radially outwardly and upwardly from the central panel and a crown seaming panel surrounding the chuck wall and extending radially outwardly from the chuck wall and having an outer curled end for being double-seamed with a flanged upper end portion of the container for closing of the container. • Patent number: 4428741
Abstract: A composite container for fluent materials in the liquid or semi-frozen state is disclosed, together with a method for making the same. The container includes a vertically arranged body member that is flared at its upper end, and an end closure member is provided including a circular central panel portion arranged within and extending across the upper end of the body member, annular chuck wall portion extending upwardly from the central panel portion adjacent the flared portion of the body member, and an annular connecting flange portion extending radially outwardly from the upper end of the chuck wall portion. The invention is characterized in that the connecting flange and chuck wall portions cooperate with the flared portion of the body member to define an annular space in which is arranged a resilient annular mass of sealing material.

  • Patent number: 4363404
Abstract: An end closure member is disclosed for closing the bottom of an institutional-size composite container for frozen liquid or fluent materials (such as eggs removed from the shell), characterized in that the end closure member includes a center panel portion, an annular rim portion, and a vertical intermediate tubular portion that connects the center panel portion with, and at a lower elevation than, the rim portion, whereby during the subsequent freezing of the product within the container, the freezing progresses upwardly from the central panel portion, thereby relieving stress on the connection between the bottom end member and the composite body wall. The bottom end closure member includes a stacking rib adapted for insertion within a corresponding stacking recess contained within the container upper closure member.

  • Patent number: 4354784
Abstract: A non-silver scored metal end closure member, and an apparatus and method for forming the same, are disclosed, characterized by the provision of a continuous scoreline between the radius and central panel portions of the end. The scoreline includes, in cross-sectional profile, a horizontal flat bottom wall, and outwardly divergent outer and inner side walls. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the scoreline is contained in the upper horizontal surface of the metal end, the other side wall of the scoreline being concave and having a radius less than that of the radius portion of the metal end, the bottom wall being tangent to the outer side wall. The inner side wall comprises either a flat surface arranged at an obtuse angle of about 165.degree. relative to the bottom wall, or a concave surface tangent to the bottom wall. In another modification, the inner side wall is concave and tangent to the bottom wall, the radius of the inner side wall being at least as great as that of the outer side wall.

  • Patent number: 4258859
Abstract: An improved scored metal end closure member for composite containers and the like is disclosed, together with the method and apparatus for forming the same, characterized in that a fully or partially removable panel portion is defined in the central panel portion by a scoreline of novel no-fin configuration. The scoreline--which is formed in one horizontal surface of the central panel portion by a truncated wedge score indenting device--has a generally trapezoidal configuration including a flat bottom wall, and generally divergent side walls. The opposite horizontal surface of the central panel portion is stepped to define a region of reduced thickness that extends from a location opposite one edge of the scoreline bottom wall in a direction away from the scoreline. Consequently, during progressive removal of the removable panel portion, the formation of sharp fins or projections on the residual lip remaining on the metal end is avoided.
