    Abstract: This invention provides a production process, which can stably produce high-quality satin white (calcium trisulfoaluminate) having very small and homogeneous particulate shapes suitable for incorporation into coated paper for printing, and an apparatus for use in said process. In this process for producing calcium trisulfoaluminate, a calcium hydroxide suspension (A) is reacted with an aqueous aluminum sulfate solution (B) to produce calcium trisulfoaluminate (C). The aqueous aluminum sulfate solution (B) is added in plurality of stages to the calcium hydroxide suspension (A). At least any one stage of the plurality of stages addition, addition of the aqueous aluminum sulfate solution (B) to the calcium hydroxide suspension (A) is carried out in such a manner that the aqueous aluminum sulfate solution (B) is continuously added to the calcium hydroxide suspension (A) being continuously transferred.

The coated paper also comprises the thermal shrinkage force (R) which satisfies following formula when measured pursuant to the measuring method described in the specification; 0?R?45 gf A sample coated paper is moisture-adjusted in accordance with JIS-P-8111. Then, it will be cut into specific dimension along with orthogonally to the cross direction. Next, the paper will be put through Thermo Mechanical Analyzer to obtain R that is measured by predetermined technique. The coated paper will be obtained easily by using a base paper coated with PVA having a saponification degree of not less than 85 mol % in an amount of 0.5-5 g/m2 per side surface after the coating material was dried and dried.

    Abstract: The method of making a coated paper having a thermal shrinkage force (R), which satisfies the following relationship 0≦R≦45 gf, includes coating a paper web on both sides with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol to form a coated paper web, drying the coated paper web to form a base paper with a polyvinyl alcohol coating having a coating weight on a dry basis of 0.5 to 5.0 g/m2 per side of the base paper and then applying a coating composition composed of an adhesive and at least one inorganic pigment to the base paper having the polyvinyl alcohol coating, followed by drying in order to form a coating layer on the base paper. The aqueous solution of the polyvinyl alcohol preferably has a viscosity of from 100 to 2000 mPa·s measured with a Brookfield viscometer at 60 rpm and 20° C. and the polyvinyl alcohol dissolved in the aqueous solution has a saponification degree of not less than 85 mol %.

    Abstract: A process for manufacturing a coated paper for use in printing is characterized in that the coated paper for printing is produced by coating a color consisting mainly of pigment and a water-soluble binder made of starch or starch derivatives to the surface of a base paper, then drying and finishing it. Steam or an aqueous penetrant solution having a penetrating force of less than 50 seconds is sprayed or applied over the dry coated layer surface of the coated paper, prior to it being finished with a calender, for redistributing the water-soluble binder in the coated layer in order to correct its uneven distribution, which is the cause of printing mottle during the offset printing operation.

    Abstract: In a method of producing cast coated paper in which a wet coating layer containing as its main components, pigment and adhesive, is heated to permit a gel state to be formed in the layer, or is dried and then rewetted, and then is pressed against a highly polished finishing surface of a heated drum so as to be provided with a glazed finish.The present invention provides an improvement wherein an apparatus for emitting near-infrared radiations into the wet coating layer is employed as a means for permitting a gel state to be formed in the layer or as a means for drying the wet coating layer. The apparatus emits near-infrared radiations having wave lengths of 0.75 to 2.0 .mu.m at the peak wave length of their range which are directed into the wet coating layer.
