  • Patent number: 8011300
Abstract: Systems and methods for high-speed variable printing are provided. Ink jet technology and lithographic systems may be combined in such a way to create a fully variable and high-quality print system. Ink is applied to a printing cylinder. An aqueous solution is then applied on top of the ink to produce a negative image. A positive image is then transferred in ink to a print medium. The systems and methods described herein may be used to create high-quality one-to-one marketing applications.

  • Patent number: 7967407
Abstract: A printing system includes a printer that prints only a sense mark on a substrate and an imaging unit. The imaging unit prints data onto the substrate and includes a plurality of printheads. The printing system also includes a sensor that detects the sense mark and a controller that instructs the imaging unit to print data onto the substrate, wherein the controller distributes print data among the plurality of printheads.

  • Publication number: 20110132213
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for controlling application of a substance to a substrate involve the use of a gating agent that blocks the substance from or attracts the substance to the substrate. The apparatus and methods may utilize ink jet technology to apply the gating agent directly to the substrate or to an intermediate surface. The substance may be an ink, an electrically conductive material, a magnetic material, a carrier for a therapeutic, diagnostic, or marking substance other than an ink, or a carrier for any other type of substance.

  • Publication number: 20110019876
Abstract: A method of detecting an alignment error includes the steps of controlling a first portion of one or more imaging units to image on a substrate a first plurality of substantially parallel lines extending along a first direction and a second plurality of substantially parallel lines extending along a second direction and controlling a second portion of one or more imaging units to image a third plurality of substantially parallel lines extending along the first direction and a fourth plurality of substantially parallel lines extending along the second direction. One or more distances between adjacent lines of the second plurality of lines are varied and one or more distances between adjacent lines of the fourth plurality of lines are varied. Further, the lines imaged by the first and second portions form an alignment pattern.

  • Publication number: 20090153905
Abstract: A method of processing an electronic version of a variable document for a recipient includes the steps of receiving the electronic version of the variable document for the recipient and rasterizing the electronic version into one or more rasterized images, wherein each rasterized image is assigned a unique identifier. The method further includes the step of generating a run instance for the recipient, wherein the run instance includes the unique identifiers of the one or more rasterized images.

  • Publication number: 20090128841
Abstract: A page that is designated by a page description language representation is printed using first and second print units, wherein each print unit prints a portion of the page. A first RIP rasterizes the page description language representation to generate a first raster image representation that is printed by the first unit. A second RIP rasterizes the page description language representation to generate a second raster image representation that is printed by the second unit.

  • Publication number: 20090064886
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for controlling application of a substance to a substrate involve the use of a functional agent that blocks the substance from or attracts the principal substance to the substrate. The apparatus and methods may utilize ink jet technology to apply the functional agent directly to the substrate or to an intermediate surface. The principal substance may be an ink, a dye, a marking substance other than an ink, or a carrier for any other type of substance.
