    Abstract: A tire balancing machine in which the tire is mounted on an axle which is pivotally mounted relative to a road wheel while maintaining the axis of rotation of the tire parallel to the axis of rotation of the road wheel, the tire being spring loaded against the road wheel to simulate the weight load borne by the tire in normal use and the road wheel driven at a speed to rotate the tire at its intended operating speed, sensors being provided to measure the magnitude and location of the horizontal and vertical asymmetrical forces developed at the tire patch, the force measurements being utilized to determine the location and amounts of weight to be applied to the wheel rim to offset the asymmetrical forces generated by the tire in use.

    Abstract: Tire conditioning apparatus wherein the tire may be loaded and conditioned both in a static mode and in a dynamic mode, the apparatus including a tire mounting assembly comprising a pair of pivotally mounted upright arms rotatably mounting a drive shaft by means of which the tire is rotated at any desired speed, the tire mounting assembly having a static mode in which the arms are held in fixed position and the tire is loaded by pressing a road wheel against the tire under a predetermined fixed load, and a dynamic mode in which the upright arms are spring loaded and act to press the tire into contact with the road wheel under conditions simulating the action of the vehicle's suspension system, sensors being provided to locate and measure the forces generated by the tire in each mode and also in a third or free running mode in which the tire is free from contact with the road wheel.

    Abstract: A method of operating an hydraulic power system having a piston with opposing piston heads reciprocally mounted in opposing piston chambers, the piston being directionally responsive to a pair of control valves adapted to be sequentially opened and closed to actuate the piston for movement in opposite directions. The control valves each having a series of sequentially acting valve elements which control fluid flow to and from the piston, a condition being established in which the piston is at one end of its stroke and a first of the piston heads is under relatively high pressure and the other under relatively nominal pressure, the piston being driven to the opposite end of its stroke by first relieving the high pressure on the first of the piston heads to a nominal level and thereafter rapidly increasing the fluid pressure on the other of the piston heads, the piston and control valves working at all times against solid columns of fluid under controlled positive pressures.

    Abstract: An hydraulic power system comprising a dual acting work piston adapted to be operatively connected to an external mass to be moved, the piston being instantly directionally responsive to a pair of control valves adapted to be sequentially opened and closed to actuate the work piston for movement in opposite directions, the control valves each having a series of sequentially acting valve elements which control fluid flow to and from the work piston, the system forming an hydraulic closed loop which is completely filled with fluid during both charging and discharging, the work piston and control valves working at all times against solid columns of fluid under controlled positive pressures, the system being capable of developing accelerating forces having a magnitude up to 500 G's and of being operated both directly or remotely utilizing electronic, mechanical or hydraulic actuating means with no appreciable phase lag between initial actuation and the completion of the work stroke.

    Abstract: An integrated system for measuring and correcting rubber tires for forces generated by dynamic non-uniformities and for measuring and marking both sides of the tire for lack of symmetry. The force measurements are fed to a computer and the forces indicative of dynamic non-uniformities correlated to given angular positions on the tire by means of a pair of transmissions which act as a shaft encoder, the transmissions incorporating computer controlled timing discs which act through an hydraulic controller to control the honing mechanism which cuts the outside periphery of the tires at the proper locations and in the proper amounts to reduce the non-uniformities to an acceptable low level. Computer control means are also provided to revolve the tires to the proper positions for the marking of their side walls to inidcate points of maximum unbalance so that corrective measures may be thereafter taken to correct the tires for lack of symmetry.

    Abstract: An integrated system for eliminating the vibrations generated in vehicular tires under cruising speed conditions by correcting the tire both for peripheral non-uniformities and for lack of symmetry. The system includes means for revolving the tire being corrected under conditions simulating the weight load placed on the tire in actual use as well as the centrifugal forces encountered when operated at a cruising speed of from 50 to 90 miles per hour, together with means for measuring both the magnitude and location of the forces generated by peripheral non-uniformities developed in the tire and also the magnitude and location of the forces generated by lack of tire symmetry.
