Publication number: 20070028471Abstract: A method for correcting a vehicle compass measurement for an interfering magnetic field generated by a vehicle accessory, where the interfering magnetic field has an intensity sufficient to cause a compass measurement error, includes monitoring the operation of the vehicle accessory and detecting a characteristic of operation of the vehicle accessory. A measurement or timing signal is then generated based on the characteristic of operation. A magnetic field for direction is measured in response to the measurement signal and an offset or correction value is determined based at least one the measured magnetic field and the characteristic of operation of the vehicle accessory.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2004Publication date: February 8, 2007Applicant: Johnson Controls Technology CompanyInventors: Thomas Olson, Todd Witkowski, Thomas Wright

Publication number: 20060288597Abstract: The compass system of the present invention utilizes an improved calibration routine in which a processing circuit of the compass recalibrates the compass each time three data points are obtained from a magnetic field sensor that meet predetermined criteria. One such criterion is that the three data points define corners of a triangle that is substantially non-obtuse. When three data points have been obtained that define a triangle meeting this criterion, the processing circuit calculates a center point for a circle upon which all three data points lie by solving the equation x2+y2+Ax+By+C=0 for A, B, and C, using the coordinate values (x,y) for the three data points and defining the center point as (?A/2, ?B/2).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2006Publication date: December 28, 2006Inventors: Jeffrey Parks, Thomas Olson, David Slater

Publication number: 20060226071Abstract: An aerobic system provided to treat sewage generated by a modern larger home which does not have access to a municipal sewage connection The features of this system are adaptable to upgrade and/or replace existing systems. In a preferred embodiment the system uses two 1000 gallon tanks, a first pretreatment tank to receive raw sewage, remove settleable and floatable solids from the sewage, and discharge into a second tank in which the pool of sewage is aerated. The second tank contains a motor driven aerator and a unique self-cleaning filter driven by an outgoing liquid stream from the aerator. After passing through the filter, the liquid is then discharged into a leaching field or nearby stream as permitted by the proper regulatory agency.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2006Publication date: October 12, 2006Inventors: Douglas Allen, Thomas Olson, Carl Miller

Patent number: 7051230Abstract: In a computer system, a method and system for allowing customization of data collection in the event of a system error is described. In one embodiment, a Program Registration Table (PRT) contains entries associating a program name with an executable file and associated parameters. Additionally, an Error Matrix (EM) includes entries specifying which program(s) in the PRT to execute in response to a particular system error. In the event of a system error, the program(s) to execute is determined by examining the entries in the EM. The program(s) is then executed. The output from the program(s) executed may then be sent offsite for analysis. Changing the behavior of the machine in the event of a system error may be accomplished by updating entries in the PRT and EM, without the need to change any code on the system.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2002Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: John Thomas Olson

Publication number: 20060031265Abstract: A computer-implemented process for replacing old files having old names on a permanent storage medium with new files in volatile memory. Some of these files may be opaque files, which are old files that have become new files without undergoing any changes, other than possibly name changes. The primary steps of this replacement can comprise first saving the non-opaque new files onto the permanent storage medium and assigning them temporary filenames. An opaque recovery file listing the old name and a temporary name for each opaque file is created. A primary recovery file listing the temporary name and a final name for each new file is created. After the names of the opaque files are changed to their temporary names, the names of the non-opaque old files are changed from their old names to backup names. Then, the names of the new files are changed from their temporary names to their final names. The recovery files and the old files can be deleted.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 5, 2005Publication date: February 9, 2006Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Alan Ramaley, Thomas Olson, Darrell Aldrich, David Buchthal

Patent number: 6901481Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing transactional information in persistent memory. In one embodiment, the invention features a persistent volatile memory and an intermediary program in communication with the persistent volatile memory. The intermediary program receives transactional information and stores the information in the persistent volatile memory. A computer uses the intermediary program to enable the contents of the persistent volatile memory to remain unaltered during a failure of the computer. Additionally, the intermediary program may determine whether the transactional information meets a predetermined criteria before storing the information in the persistent volatile memory.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2001Date of Patent: May 31, 2005Assignee: Stratus Technologies Bermuda Ltd.Inventor: Thomas Olson
