Patent number: 8221440Abstract: An introducer and method for delivering a prosthetic fabric into a patient. The introducer includes a delivery tube having a distal end adapted to be inserted into the patient and a lumen that receives the prosthetic fabric. A loader may be provided to reconfigure the prosthetic fabric from a first configuration to a collapsed configuration and/or to insert the collapsed fabric into the lumen of the delivery tube. A plunger may be provided to push the prosthetic fabric through the delivery tube and into the patient. The loader and plunger may be combined in a dual-purpose component that is reversible to either load the fabric into the delivery tube or push the fabric through the delivery tube.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2010Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: C.R. Bard, Inc.Inventors: Karen E. Kullas, Daniel E. Hass, Thomas J. Capuzziello, Dennis J. Coffey, David C. Calabrese

Patent number: 8182545Abstract: An implantable prosthesis and a method of repairing an anatomical defect, such as a tissue or muscle wall defect, by promoting tissue growth thereto, while limiting the incidence of postoperative adhesions between a portion of the prosthesis and tissue or organs. The prosthesis is formed of a biologically compatible, flexible layer of repair fabric suitable for reinforcing tissue or muscle and closing anatomical defects, and a barrier layer for physically isolating at least a portion of one side of the fabric from areas likely to form adhesions. A peripheral barrier extends about at least a portion of the outer peripheral edge of the repair fabric to inhibit adhesions between the outer peripheral edge and adjacent tissue and organs. The repair fabric may include an outer margin that has been melted and resolidified to render the outer peripheral edge substantially impervious to tissue ingrowth.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2008Date of Patent: May 22, 2012Assignee: C.R. Bard, Inc.Inventors: Dennis Cherok, Roger E. Darois, Ronald L. Greene, Thomas J. Capuzziello, James D. Mello

Publication number: 20110288568Abstract: An implantable prosthesis for repairing a tissue or muscle wall defect. The prosthesis includes a perforated sheet of a biologically compatible material to cover the tissue or muscle wall defect. The perforated sheet has a plurality of perforations extending through the sheet. The perforations may be distributed across the perforated sheet in a non-grid arrangement. The perforations may be non-uniformly distributed across the perforated sheet in groups of perforations arranged in a plurality of concentric circular patterns. Each perforation may be separated from an adjacent perforation by a web of material having a length between adjacent perforations that is a predetermined multiple of the diameter of the perforations.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 19, 2008Publication date: November 24, 2011Inventors: Thomas J. Capuzziello, Marianne Staudenmeier, Michael A. Cote, Brian Leach
