  • Publication number: 20020056157
Abstract: The invention relates to a wave pool wherein a portion of the floor and/or beach is provided with a grated section. With the grated section extending along the beach, the grates will allow water to pass into a cavity, wherein backflows are eliminated and rip currents are avoided. With the grated section extending along the floor, the grated section is able to change the effective depth of the pool floor at that location, thereby altering the wave formation characteristics. One or more channels can be provided to circulate water away from the cavity toward the other end of the pool, which helps keep the pool in substantial equilibrium.

  • Patent number: 6105527
Abstract: The present invention relates to a boat-activated wake enhancement method and system that extends from the boat. According to one aspect, a pair of protuberances is provided on the lower stem quarter of the boat's hull, primarily along the sidewalls. The protuberances are elongated and each has a rounded surface that extends substantially laterally outward in relation to the boat hull. The protuberances help to displace more water by increasing and shifting the effective width of the boat, causing the boat to travel deeper in the water, and creating additional interference that affects the natural wakes created by the boat. Additional inverted hydrofoil members and ballasts can also be provided to cause the boat to travel deeper in the water and therefore create larger waves. The present invention is used to increase the size and enhance the shape and location of the wake and/or waves for wakeboarding and wake surfing.

  • Patent number: 5860766
Abstract: The present invention is a boat activated wave generating device for use in a body of water. The wave generating device preferably has wave forming sections that help to create wave shapes and wake formations upon which surfing and/or other skimming maneuvers can be performed. The wave forming sections are moved by the boat and have forward leading edges and upper flow forming surfaces. The device can be pivotally connected to the boat and pulled, or directly attached to the side of the boat hull. In operation, the device is moved through the water such that the forward leading edges are submerged to lift water onto the flow forming surfaces. Water flowing on and conforming to the surfaces is directed relatively upwardly and/or laterally across the surfaces, to create various wave shapes and wake formations thereon.

  • Patent number: 5766082
Abstract: The present invention relates to a water ride comprising a channel of water connected to a beach area, wherein a torrential flow of water can be released into the channel, to create a swell that travels through the channel, and then turns into a solitary tidal wave that spills and breaks onto the beach. The water in the channel can also be made to flow in a uniform direction, due to the momentum and energy transferred from repeatedly releasing the torrential flow of water into the channel. The curvature and orientation of the beach area relative to the channel causes the waves breaking onto the beach to travel radially outward in an arc-shape, causing the waves to spill over and break, as they make their way around the beach.

  • Patent number: 5738590
Abstract: Sheet wave generators have recently been hailed as the new generation of simulated wave generating water rides. The present invention relates to a sheet wave generator with a riding surface appended to a single container of water, i.e., a swimming pool, wave pool, or any existing or new water facility. Because the riding surface of the present invention is contained along its outer periphery, the water ride can be compact so that is suitable for placement in a relatively small area of land. The ride surface itself has an inclined surface, a transition turn area, and a downward declining surface which feeds back into the pool. This butterfly configuration is relatively compact, and can be situated such that the flow of water comes from and returns to the pool area. In one embodiment, the invention also has a unique nozzle outlet area which is at or slightly below the elevation of the water surface in the pool, so that riders may skim over the nozzle area and onto the riding surface directly from the pool area.

  • Patent number: 5667445
Abstract: The present invention relates to a water ride in the form of a river loop having a channel, wherein a portion of the channel is shallow and has a supercritical sheet flow of water thereon, and a portion of the flow in the channel is relatively deep and has a subcritical flow thereon, wherein a rider can float on a floating device, such as an inner tube, and can be carried from the deep portion and onto the shallow portion, and then back into the deep portion. The rider can experience the thrill of being accelerated through the channel by the sheet flow, and because the water ride is in the form of a loop, the rider can repeatedly ride the sheet flow of water without having to exit. A hydraulic jump is preferably created, as the supercritical sheet flow meets the subcritical flow, through which riders travel for a thrilling ride experience.

  • Patent number: 5564859
Abstract: An amusement apparatus for water sports activities wherein a flowing body of water is provided. The water moves across an inclined, declined or horizontal riding surface upon which the velocity, volume and gravitational dynamics of the flowing body of water is such that a rider may perform water skimming/simulated surfing maneuvers thereon. Composite structures with horizontal and inclined surfaces and varying flow velocity over time across specifically shaped structures permit water skimming/simulated surfing maneuvers on unbroken, spilling or tunnel type wave forms. Asymmetry in the downstream ridge line of an inclined surface allows spilling type wave formations as well as facilitating the removal of a transient surge. A novel fluid "half-pipe" waveform is also introduced.

  • Patent number: 5503597
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controllably injecting high velocity jets of water at an elevation at or above water level towards a buoyant object (e.g., a boat or participant in an inner tube) that is floating in a deep water recreation attraction, and causing injected water-to-object momentum transfer and directed buoyant object movement irrespective of the motion of water upon which the buoyant object floats. Structurally, a water conduit is positioned horizontally at or near the surface of a body of water. Adjacent to this conduit is positioned, in parallel corridor like fashion, a second water conduit or a benign retaining structure. The inside width of the corridor is a distance sufficient to permit passage of the buoyant object. An array of water injectors is aligned on the inside of the conduit-formed-corridor at an elevation at or above water level.

  • Patent number: 5421782
Abstract: An action river water attraction is provided comprising one or more water rides connected to a river loop, wherein the flow of water from a connected ride empowers the flow of water in the river loop. The rider enters a connected ride and then enters the river loop to experience rapid effects. They may then continue to ride the loop until the rider is ready to exit, or can enter into another connected water ride directly from the river loop. A rider can experience the thrill of one water ride and then enter the river loop for an extended amount of time. Various special effects such as lateral flow shears, differential flows at junctions and turns, boils, eddies, whirlpools, backflows and hydraulic jumps. In this manner, the endless river loop serves as the queuing area for riders who are waiting to enter connected water rides.
