  • Publication number: 20080012198
Abstract: Discrete means of setting a feeder to process a wide range of media, i.e., sheets, slips, envelopes, booklets and hand collated documents, etc. as well as providing a method of utilizing the feeder for manual feed operation. The foregoing is accomplished by a friction-clutch retard feeder equipped with one or more friction clutches. When a selection lever is moved to a position 1, a primary clutch engages the separator roller with a resistive torque T1. The selection lever configures the mechanism such that the separator roller rotation is resisted entirely by the torque of the primary clutch. When the selection lever is moved to a position 2, the ground of the primary clutch is removed, and the rotation of the separator roll is coupled through a gear ratio to a secondary clutch. The selection of the gear ratio and the value of the secondary clutch allows the separation mechanism to be resisted by a second torque, T2, which can be lower than T1.

  • Publication number: 20070265153
Abstract: A method and apparatus for folding inserts by inverting the insert sheet after the first fold is made and reintroducing the folded insert sheet into a first buckle chute from the opposite end. The second fold is then made in a second buckle chute which results in either a bottom address or a middle address appearing on the folded insert in a manner that the address will appear through the window of the envelope.

  • Publication number: 20070157578
Abstract: In a mail inserter having an envelope movement mechanism to move an envelope into an insertion station and a feeder to move a pack of insert material into an insertion position so that the insert material can be inserted into the envelope, a linear array of optical sensing elements is used to determine the position of one edge of the insert material and another linear array of optical sensing elements is used to determine the position of one edge of the receiving envelope in order to make sure that there is sufficient end clearance between the insert material and the receiving envelope. A stepper motor is used to adjust the envelope position, if the end clearance is outside a predetermined range.

  • Publication number: 20070132179
Abstract: A transport module for deskewing and accumulating sheets of insert materials before the sheets are inserted into an envelope for mailing. Retractable gates are used to stop the sheets as they are separately moved into the transport module by a plurality of endless belts. Idlers are used to apply normal forces on the belts at various locations to provide traction between the sheet and the belts for moving the sheet forward. If a sheet is skewed when it enters the transport module, one corner on the leading edge of the sheet encounters one of the side gates and the advancing sheet can align itself by an angular motion using the contact point as center of rotation. As such, the leading edge is registered against the retractable gates at both sides of the leading edge. The transport module can also be used as a conveyor without the accumulation function.

  • Publication number: 20070108691
Abstract: An accumulator system and method for collating a plurality of media items wherein the media items enter in seriatim at an media item entry point and become at least partially overlapped with each other at a media item exit point. A media item transport path connects the media item entry point and the media item exit point. A moveable member is mounted along the media item transport path between the entry point and the exit point. The moveable member forms part of a pocket into which media items are moved to create a collation of media items. The moveable member is moveable to change the size of the pocket. A protective member may be mounted to the moveable member and positioned to protect the trailing edge of media items in the pocket from the leading edge of media items to thereafter be moved into the pocket. The media item may be aligned in the collation position when moving the protective member to a media item trailing edge protective position.

  • Publication number: 20070102869
Abstract: A media item feed tray with an exit area for media items includes a sled moveable toward and away from the feed tray exit area. A biasing surface is mounted to the tray and extends away from the feed tray exit area. A spring member is mounted on the moveable sled and is connected to the biasing surface such that when the moveable sled is moved away from the feed tray exit area energy is stored in the spring member. The biasing surface may be a shaped rail with a cam surface and the moveable member may include a cam follower which engages the shaped rail cam surface. A first cam section and a second cam section can be provided with the moveable sled urged toward the feed tray exit area when the cam follower engages the shaped rail first cam surface section and urged away from the feed tray exit area when the cam follower engages the shaped rail second cam surface section.

  • Publication number: 20060220307
Abstract: A materials handling system includes a materials processing subsystem with a first materials transport path having a curved portion along which materials are transported and a second straight materials transport path. A diverter is connected between the processing subsystem and the first material transport path and the second material transport path. One of the first materials transport path and the second materials transport path is positioned above the other materials transport path. The diverter is operable to selectively divert materials from the materials processing subsystem to be transported by one of said first and said second transport paths. The materials processing subsystem may be an insertion subsystem for inserting materials into envelopes to form mailpieces of a first type and mailpieces of a second type.

  • Publication number: 20060220298
Abstract: A feeder for feeding media items from a tray includes a first nudger roller and a second nudger roller. The first and the second nudger roller are moveably mounted to the feeder. The first and the second nudger rollers are in a first position when a tray of a first type is connected to said feeder the first and said second nudger rollers are in a second position when a tray of a second type is connected to said feeder. The tray of a first type may be a shingle feed tray and the tray of a second type may be a stacks feed tray. With the shingle feed tray the first position for the first and the second nudger rollers are where each nudger roller engages each media item in a shingles tray when each such media item is positioned in the shingles tray to exit the shingles tray and to be moved from the shingles tray into said feeder.

  • Publication number: 20060220296
Abstract: A materials handling system includes a feeder station having a plurality of material feeders and an insertion subsystem. Each of the plurality of feeders are connected to a common material transport path. A first material transport path is connected to the common material transport path and to the insertion subsystem. A second material transport path is connected to the common material transport path and to the insertion subsystem. A third material transport path is connected to the first material transport path and to said insertion subsystem.
