  • Publication number: 20020179788
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a temporary spread footing for suppporting a variety of different vertically extending structures. The apparatus includes a frame with a top and bottom. The frame can have a substantial space or void in between the top and bottom into which weights or devices can be placed. A connection on top of the base removably connects to the structure to be supported. Outriggers could also be used to substantially increase the overturning moment resistance of the base. The outriggers can be removable or retractable so that for transportation, the base has minimum dimensions. The method includes pre-determining the needed weight and overturning moment resistance for a particular application and transporting the base to the site and thereafter adding weight and adjusting outriggers to match the pre-determined needed overturning moment resistance.

  • Publication number: 20020129381
Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivering interactive television (ITV) data by using the same TV scan line that also carries closed caption data. The ITV data is inserted into the scan line with CC data by detecting a gap associated with a first CC data unit. If the gap is large enough to contain all of the group of ITV data units then electronically insert the entire group of ITV data units into the gap. If the gap is not large enough to contain the entire group of ITV data units, insert a subset of the entire group of the ITV data units into the gap and continue to the gaps associated with successive CC data units, inserting subsets of the ITV data into subsequent gaps until the entire ITV message has been inserted into the gaps between CC data units.

  • Patent number: 5860733
Abstract: A lighting fixture with a controllable light block. The fixture includes a reflector and high intensity discharge lamp that requires a re-strike or warm-up period to come to full brightness or intensity. A cover member is mounted to the reflector and is moveable between an unblocked position and a blocked position. Movement of the cover member is immediate so that blockage of light from the fixture is immediately effectuated. The apparatus is configured so that cover member can be in the blocked position for indefinite periods of time even though the arc lamp continues to be operated at full power, without heat buildup which is detrimental to any part of the apparatus. The cover member also allows light control and special effects lighting options. Another aspect of the invention utilizes an aperture in the cover member that is alignable with the light source when the cover member is in the blocked position.

  • Patent number: 5813737
Abstract: A construction system suitable for erecting a modular structure such as a furniture item or the like. A first part is connectable with a second part by a releasable cross connection. A third elongate part has a cavity extending substantially over its full length for receiving the cross connection at a position therealong. The third part may be a leg member for the furniture item and the first and second parts may be rail members. Alternatively, the first part may be a coupling element for connecting modular structures together or a hinge element for pivotably attaching a door panel, the second part being a securing element for securing the coupling or hinge element to a leg member. A modular structure and a method of erecting a modular structure are also disclosed.
