  • Patent number: 6999447
Abstract: A Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) receiver (630), operating in conjunction with a transmitter (606) receives a sequence of voice packets representing a speech utterance transmitted over a VOIP wireless interface (112). A receive packet buffer (120) buffers the received sequence of voice packets after receipt and before playback of reconstructed speech. A processor (650), operating under program control, determines a transmission buffer (108) delay of a first packet in the sequence of packets representing the speech utterance. The control processor (650) further sets a prescribed amount of delay in the receive packet buffer (120) based upon the transmission buffer (108) delay so that the transmission buffer delay+receive buffer delay=a predetermined total delay.

  • Patent number: 6741554
Abstract: A wireless communication network (100) employs a method and apparatus for reliably communicating information packets in the network. A first wireless device (101) in the network transmits an information packet to a second wireless device (e.g., 102) in the network over a first wireless communication channel (403, 404). The first device then determines whether the information packet was successfully received (e.g., received without errors) by the second device. If the information packet was not successfully received, the first device retransmits the information packet to the second device over a second wireless communication channel (405, 406). In addition, and preferably substantially contemporaneous with retransmission of the first information packet, the first device transmits a second information packet to the second device over the first channel in an effort to communicate an information sequence to the second device without delays typically associated with use of a reliable protocol.

  • Patent number: 6608861
Abstract: A technique is used in a data terminal (110, 160) that encodes and decodes a data packet that is transmitted in a link of a frequency hopping system. During encoding, an information portion of the data packet is determined for transmission, a transmit redundancy check code is generated over the information portion and an identifier using a predetermined redundancy check code generator, and the data packet is generated to include the transmit redundancy check code and the information portion, but exclude the identifier. During decoding, the information portion and a received redundancy check code of the received data packet are determined, a calculated redundancy check code is generated over the information portion and the identifier, using the predetermined redundancy check code generator, and the information portion is rejected when the received redundancy check code does not match the calculated redundancy check code.

  • Patent number: 6426980
Abstract: A wireless communication system (10) employing quadrature amplitude modulation techniques comprises a system controller (22), at least one radio frequency base transmitter (26), and at least one wireless communication device (35). The system controller (22) generates a downlink call (34) for transmission between the radio frequency base transmitter (26) and the wireless communication device (35). Multiplexing an I-channel bit stream (74) comprised of a first set of calls (70) interleaved together and a Q-channel bit stream (80) comprised of a second set of calls (76) interleaved together generates the downlink call (34). One wireless communication device demultiplexes the downlink call (34) and processes the I-channel bit stream (74). Another wireless communication device demultiplexes the downlink call (34) and processes the Q-channel bit stream (80).

  • Patent number: 6138032
Abstract: A battery saving interval utilized for communicating with a portable subscriber unit (122) in a radio communication system is dynamically adjusted. An occurrence of a predetermined triggering event associated with the portable subscriber unit is observed (504), and the battery saving interval utilized for communicating with the portable subscriber unit is adjusted (506) in response to the predetermined triggering event, while battery saving intervals of other portable subscriber units in the system are left unchanged.

  • Patent number: 6078793
Abstract: A processing system (150) that generates a voice output signal having high precision controlled gain from a voice input signal by generating (225) a slow gain signal from the voice message by controlling a signal level gain of the voice signal using a setup gain and a first slow time constant, and then generating (230) a high precision controlled gain voice signal from the slow gain signal by controlling a signal level gain of the slow gain signal using at least one of a fast attack time constant and a slow release time constant.

  • Patent number: 4103107
Abstract: A base station encoder is connected to a decoder terminal and paging transmitter by means of a single voice-pair telephone line link. Automatic operations reduce operator fatigue and operating costs. Digital, tone-keyed gain controls automatically compensate for line losses. All dialing, including long distance and overseas calls, and station identification are done automatically.
