  • Patent number: 8973685
Abstract: A reaming bit designed to operate with low torque fluctuation when driven with a turbine at speeds in the order of 300-600 RPM and above features a profile that is arcuate from the gauge dimension to the nose area or alternatively has a blunt straight taper section but with a ratio of profile length (PL) to bit size (BS) of under 0.75. The blades extend into a concave cone and the cutting structure continues along the blades towards the center. The blades have a step near the gauge section to increase the exposure of the blade cutting structure. An array of protrusions are disposed parallel to and behind the cutting structure to increase high speed stability and adjacent the blade step transition to protect outer casing on run in.

  • Patent number: 8893821
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer-readable medium for drilling a wellbore is disclosed. A fluid is pumped to rotate a drilling assembly at an end of a drill string in the wellbore. A plurality of measurements of pressure of the fluid is obtained. A standard deviation of the mud pressure is estimated from the plurality of fluid pressure measurements, and a variation of a tool face angle of the drilling assembly to the pumped fluid is estimated from a comparison of the estimated standard deviation of pressure to a selected criterion. A drilling parameter can be altered to drill the wellbore based on the estimated variation of the tool face angle.

  • Patent number: 8757297
Abstract: A bearing block is provided that may be used with a drag bit body or frame to limit depth of cut of cutters on a bit. The bearing block is designed so that it may be interchangeably replaced or repaired without necessitating alteration to a standardized bit frame. The interchangeable bearing block may be used to provide a target depth of cut (TDOC) and/or a selected contact or rubbing area to support weight on bit and limit depth of cut (DOC) for improving drilling performance of a bit. The interchangeable bearing block brings manufacturing selectability by providing a customizable product in terms of depth of cut selection and cutter penetration control for different formations, which is suitable for use with a common bit frame. A rotary drill bit assembly, a unitary cone insert bearing block for a drill bit, and a bit frame are also provided.
